Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare

Rating:4/10
I don't find The Libertines and The Strokes as influential bands but good bands. They released nice couple of albums, play their live shows and that was all. Arctic Monkeys ,whose ambition on playing guitar is similar to these bands, drop another record after "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not". With a couple word, it's embarrassing for me hearing stupid high school kind of vocals on song "Teddy Picker". On previous Arctic record, there were danceable, likeable, disco-indie style songs which are so popular in the UK recently. Huge amount of indie bands are coming to scene in these days and only few of them gets support.

This time, borrowing from the Jam, the Clash, and the Smiths, Arctics mostly sound dull. I have to appreciate Arctics' ambition on making music in short order, and their early coming success on music industry with teen workaday lyrics, dum-dum guitars, a cover of someone else who looks charismatic. This is ordinary throughout. 24 April, 2007

After having read your reviews for months, I think you just can't understand this kind of music. You can't take it as what it is, teenagers' music. I think Arctic Monkeys are the voice of a whole generation of young people and maybe you won't be catched by their tunes if you are older. I don't mean they make commercial bullshit for stupid teenagers who don't know anything about music but, they just say what thousands of them would say in their case. I don't know. Obviously, they ain't virtuosos but their message connects perfectly with young people.

Well, he loves The Doors for chrissakes. That should say enough.

As a teenager and an educated one at that, I have to say that the Arctic Monkeys suck. There are no goddamn robots in 1984.

The Arctic Monkey's are perhaps one of the most hyped bands of the modern times, pushing out the same tired riffs and plastered with ridiculously mornic vocals. Through trying to breakaway from celebrity culture they've managed to only attract listeners who obsess over the pop idles, the gossip magazines and - in general, morons. This album just seems to scream that Turner just went out and bought a load of expensive effects pedals and chucked them in for the hell of it. To summarise, this is preppy, dull and unoriginal. However, we all know that regardless, its going to win album of the year anyway and be praised by those pandering suck ups at nme as the best thing to happen to music, while the genuine music community cries in disbelief. As for an earlier comment about being the voice of teenagers, I live in Leeds and nearly everyone I know thinks they are over rated.

I'm not saying they ain't over rated, actually I did say they are not virtuosos. But there's a difference between saying they suck and they are great. Musically, they are average (not so original, but still deserves a listen). But I think the most important thing is based on their lyrics. With easy tricks and simple lyrics they succed creating something perfectly connected with young people.
Analyzing music from a strict objective perspective is an error. You gotta see beyond the music itself. Sometimes some commercial succesful music is just crap, but there are some groups you gotta ask yourself why they are on the top and Arctic Monkeys is one of these.

yeah i'm not a commercial guy, you can't buy me. I'm not interested in playing who is right who is wrong game. Music is personal. And thanks for the comments.

you have horrible grammar and an even worse ability to get a point across. horrible excuse for a "review." not saying i like the album or anything, but give me a break. you suck ass.

Maybe I'm stupid, but I really appreciate the new Arctic Monkeys. It doesn't need to be alternative, and/or unpopular to be good. It's not the greatest album of all times. They arn't the best band ever. However, they are good... I listen to the songs a few times and now I can't stop. It works on me. I love it. You can disagree, but people here have all ready an idea on AM. They don't like them, so they don't like their new release...to bad for you guys.

"It doesn't need to be alternative, and/or unpopular to be good."
yeah we agree with you with that, but who says it should be alternative unpopular to be good?

As you can see, you can find many popular artists in this blog, and also many great examples of underrated or forgotten music.

well, you can love or not Arctic Monkeys, but beleive me, you should enjoy to have such bands like this these days, what would you have said if you had to grow with Modern talking, Madona, Michael Jackson, Ha Ha, Toto, Bon Jovi, earth wind and Fire,Duran Duran, Europe....
Just enjoy Arctic Monkeys, Strokes, Baby Shamble...

I guess that most of you that dont get it simply don't because you're american .
What they talk about is typically european(english) , all the stories ! I'm not from england myself but I can quite agree about most of stuff they talk about and if you just can't recognize lyricists & bands with great wits & if you just like music cus it's catchy then IT'S YOUR LOSS!
Your taste sucks , not ours :).

These are your opinions. Don't say because you're american. It's easy to see that you know anything about rock music or music. It's rude, and respect to the place where rock n' roll was invented.

i loved the arctic monkeys first album. good catchy original rock. but this second one carries no appeal for me or anyone else that i've talked to... it's boring, why-am-i-listening-to-this music. i do plan on giving it one more try but my first impression is one of huge disappointment. no depth, no complexity, and ya sure as hell can't dance to it!

I don't think you get the suddle complexity of this album. The connection between the music and the lyrics is unique on such a new level. What makes the Arctic Monkeys so brilliant in many people's opinion is that the melodies are simple, but the formulas in the song writing is so complex, and every band member focuses so accutely on every element for every single note played, and each member understands the songs purpose.

out of all the catchy songs in that album, u choose the most lame one to prove ur point? ur lame dude.
