Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is the debut album by Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys, released on 23 January 2006. The band recorded the album in a studio at Chapel Studio, Lincolnshire, in September 2005 before embarking on their first world tour. The album became the fastest selling debut album in the UK since records began, selling over 360,000 copies.

The album includes both tracks from the band's original EP, Five Minutes with the Arctic Monkeys, as well as their first two singles and UK Number Ones, "I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor" and "When The Sun Goes Down".

The original release date was scheduled as 30 January 2006, but was brought forward to 23 January 2006 due to "high demand". Although the same was done with Franz Ferdinand, there remains continued speculation that the move attempts to counter the effects of the album's leak and online file-sharing. Many of the tracks featured on the album were freely available to download in early 2005 from uploaded demo CDs given out by the band, but nonetheless all the re-recorded album versions had been leaked onto the internet by December 2005.

On the first day of its release, the album became the fastest selling debut rock album in British history, selling just under 120,000 copies. This figure meant more copies were sold in 24 hours than the former record holder - Oasis' Definitely Maybe, sold in a week. By the end of the week, the album had sold 363,735 copies - more than the rest of the Top 20 combined - and broke Hear'say's 2001 record for the fastest selling debut album.

Its release in the United States on 21 February 2006 saw it become the second fastest selling debut indie album in history, turning over around 34,000 copies in its first week and achieving #24 in the album charts. The album also went to #1 in Australia.

Stereophonics - You Gotta Go There To Come Back

You Gotta Go There To Come Back is Stereophonics' fourth album, released on V2 in 2003.

The album shows a newly found maturity compared to the brazenness of the previous three.

Stereophonics are a Welsh music group formed in 1992 and originally known as Tragic Love Company, a name inspired by their favourite bands Tragically Hip, Mother Love Bone and Bad Company. They started out as a teenage cover band and later, inspired by Stuart's grandmother's gramophone changed their name to "Stereophonics". They hail from Cwmaman, near Aberdare in South Wales and after they changed their name they were one of the first bands to be signed to Richard Branson's V2 label in August 1996. Their best known songs include "A Thousand Trees", "Mr. Writer", "Local Boy in the Photograph", "Dakota, "Maybe Tomorrow", "Just Looking" and a cover of Mike d'Abo's "Handbags and Gladrags".

The Clash - Combat Rock

Combat Rock is a 1982 album released by The Clash. It was the last album to contain the "original" line-up before Mick Jones left, and Topper Headon was kicked out due to drug-related reasons.

The album includes what is probably their most famous song, "Rock The Casbah" and includes many different styles of music, following up the trend from their former album, "Sandinista!".

In January, 2000 this album along with the rest of the Clash's catalog was remastered and re-released.

Belle and Sebastian:Storytelling [2002]

Storytelling is an album by Belle & Sebastian. It is the score to the Todd Solondz movie Storytelling. Belle & Sebastian experienced many notable problems in communication with Solondz whilst scoring the movie, and as such only about 6 minutes of music by them was actually used in the movie itself.

Belle & Sebastian's Storytelling is a compromise as well, as this schizoid album is clearly divided by what Belle & Sebastian consider a soundtrack (Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Graduate) and what New Line considers a soundtrack (Pulp Fiction, apparently).

There are a few gems on the album. Of the six pop songs included here, two are very good. "Storytelling" is a breezy little tune, sung by Isobel Campbell. It has just the right amount of bounce in the piano and not too much Sarah Records in the vocal delivery, it works out all very well. "Big John Shaft" is Belle and Sebastian trying out the ultra-white funk and succeeding quite admirably. For a lot of people, these two songs will make the record worth purchase—I’d say wait for some sort of Belle and Sebastian compilation.

Neil Young - On the Beach

On the Beach is a rock album by Neil Young, released in 1974. The title track and front cover imply a post-apocalyptic vision of the world which could well be inspired by the novel and movie On the Beach.

Recorded after but released before the harrowing Tonight's the Night, On the Beach shared some of that album’s bleakness and crude production –- which came as a shock to fans and critics alike as this was the long-awaited studio follow-up to the commercially-oriented HarvestRolling Stone review described it as “one of the most despairing albums of the decade”, later critics such as AMG’s William Ruhulmann used the benefit of hindsight to conclude that “[Young] was saying goodbye to despair, not being overwhelmed by it”. The despair of "Tonight's the Night," communicated through intentional underproduction and lyrical pessimism, gives way to a more polished album that is still pessimistic but not so much so. Much like Tonight's the Night, On the Beach was not much of a commercial success at the time of its release, but over the years has come attain both a cult following and high critical regard. album -- but also included hints pointing towards a more subtle outlook, particularly opener “Walk On,” in which Young combines his cynical outlook with a touch of closure and a wish to move on and keep living. While the original

For nearly two decades, On the Beach notably headed the list of most-desired albums not released on CD. Along with three other mid-period Young albums, it had been withheld from re-release until 2003; the reasons remain murky but there is some evidence that Young himself didn’t want the albums out on CD, variously citing “fidelity problems” and legal issues. Beginning in 2000, over 5000 fans signed an on-line petition calling for the release of the album on CD; this wish was finally granted in 2003.

Chris Isaak - Forever Blue

Forever Blue is a 1995 album by American rock and roll musician Chris Isaak. The album included the song Baby Did A Bad, Bad Thing which was featured in Stanley Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

Chris Isaak (born Christopher Joseph Isaak June 26, 1956 in Stockton, California) is an American indie rock, pop, and rock and roll singer, songwriter, and occasional actor.

Isaak's music can be described as a blend of country, blues, rock and roll, pop and surf rock.

He signed a contract to Warner Brothers Records in 1984 for his first album Silvertone. Isaak's contract was renewed in 1988 when Warner Brothers moved him to their Reprise Records label.

His best-known song is "Wicked Game". Though released on the 1989 album Heart Shaped World, an instrumental version of the song was later featured in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart (and also years later in the 2000 film The Family Man). An Atlanta radio station DJ began playing the full version and it quickly became a nation-wide top ten hit. The music video for the song was directed by Herb Ritts and was a big MTV and VH1 hit; shot in black and white, it starred Isaak and model Helena Christensen rolling on the beach, embracing and whispering in each others' ears.

Devendra Banhart - The Charles C. Leary (2002)

Friday, March 10, 2006

Devendra Banhart (Born 30 May, 1981 in Houston, Texas but raised in Venezuela) is a psych folk singer/songwriter whose first few records were released on the Young God Records label from New York City; his most recent CD was released by XL Recordings. He is one of the most popular artists to come out of the new New Weird America movement that includes performers such as Faun Fables, Animal Collective, Viking Moses, Jack Rose, Jana Hunter, the MV + EE Medicine Show, Currituck Co., Six Organs of Admittance, We the Royal, and many others. He is also a member of the group Vetiver.

Banhart is often compared to such disparate artists as Marc Bolan, Daniel Johnston, Billie Holiday, Syd Barrett, Nick Drake, John Fahey, and Tiny Tim. His music tends to consist of fairly simple guitar melodies with minimal other instrumentation, and his lyrics are often surreal and naturalistic.

My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything

sn't Anything is the official debut album by My Bloody Valentine, released in 1988 after years of issuing either EPs or mini-LPs. Although usually not considered as good as the follow-up Loveless, Isn't Anything was still a pioneering release for the shoegazing movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Style

Displaying, more than ever, a strong Cocteau Twins and The Jesus & Mary Chain influence, Isn't Anything established itself as one of the leading albums in the shoegazing movement. Specifically, it is an album of, for the most part, pop-rock songs, with the almost constant use of distorted guitars reminiscent of the two referred bands, either throughout songs, undifferentiatedly, or in some cases, as a climax. The bass guitar is rarely particularly distinguishable within songs, while O'Ciosoig's drumming, in its often dry, spastic style, gives some of the songs a hint of punk-leanings. Two songs in particular, "All I Need" and "No More Sorry", in their caustic quality and dominant guitars, point towards the direction its follow-up, Loveless, would head into.

Portishead - self titled (1997)

Thursday, March 09, 2006

With Dummy, their 1994 debut, Portishead not only created a classic of turntable-derived soul, but defined their sound so exhaustively as to spawn a host of imitators. So what to do for a follow-up? As it happened, the answer was simple--refine the template. This self-titled album simply ups the ante on everything that made their debut so special: the brooding sense of menace, that deep streak of romantic fatalism. Much is made of the cinematic quality of Portishead's music--and indeed, many of these tracks sound like they should be accompanying some existentialist spy flick from the mid-1960s. But ultimately, it's singer Beth Gibbons that's their greatest asset: her vocals gliding effortlessly from the furious ("Cowboys") to the forlorn ("Mourning Air"); from the exuberant ("All Mine") to the exhausted ("Only You")--and all set to the group's most ambitious and expansive arrangements to date. A majestic, damaged and frequently terrifying masterpiece. --Andrew McGuire

Sleater-Kinney - The Woods

The Woods is the seventh studio album by the indie rock trio Sleater-Kinney. Released in 2005, the album marks a distinct departure from the group's punk and indie rock roots, and finds them moving towards a denser, heavier sound, clearly owing debt to classic rock acts such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. The album was produced by Dave Fridmann, whose earlier work includes collaborations with The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev.

This album was chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005.

The Woods is available as a double vinyl set. The first record in the set is a marbled light green color, and the second record is a reddish brown with side D printed to look like a tree slice.

Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike (2005)

Gogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band from New York City, although many of the members are immigrants from Eastern Europe. Much of their sound is inspired by Gypsy music, and the band incorporates minor-key accordion and fiddle mixed with cabaret and punk energy, dub, electric guitar and drums. In New York City they're known for their frenetic, hungry stage shows in the Lower East Side.

Gogol Bordello is led by their charismatic singer, Ukrainian immigrant Eugene Hütz (DJ Hütz), who plays the role of a translator in the movie version of Everything is Illuminated.

The band formed in 1996, when Hütz moved to New York City. Their first single was released in 1999, and several full-length albums have followed since then, as well as a European tour. According to the New York Times, "Gogol Bordello has become an underground phenomenon in New York with its brand of contrarian globalism. Their sound is raucous, sweaty, tuneful and recklessly vibrant, like the punk and Gypsy music that inspired them. Iggy Pop meets Kafka. A weird blend of the Dead Kennedys, Flogging Molly, and the Decemberists (only the instrumental sound can be related to the Decemberists.)

Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth

The Fragile, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor produced this album. Once again, Alan Moulder has been in charge of the mixing. According to a statement on the official NIN website, Reznor stated that world-famous producer Rick Rubin was Reznor's "mentor" and "source of inspiration" throughout the planning and writing process of this album. Making a guest appearance on drums is former Nirvana drummer and current Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.
The album's first single, "The Hand That Feeds," began radio play on March 14. A leaked copy of the song was broadcast on radio in February, and a leaked copy of "The Line Begins to Blur" appeared on the Internet soon afterward. On February 27, 2005, "Getting Smaller" was also leaked onto the Internet. "Right Where It Belongs" was also later leaked onto the Internet, and mere days afterwards, the entire album was leaked on filesharing networks 18 days before its official release.

My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is a 2004 album by My Chemical Romance. It is their last album with drummer Matt Pelissier. It is also considered to be a concept album, it tells the story of two lovers who die in a gunfight in the desert. The man is sent to Hell only to realize that the woman is still alive. The devil then tells the man he can be with her again if he brings him the souls of one thousand evil men. The man accepts. However, frontman Gerard Way has said that while the album started with a plot in mind, about half of the album isn't related to the plot as much as it is drawn from his own experiences with love and loss.

Fleetwood Mac - Live In Boston (2003)

Fleetwood Mac in the early Seventies

The early 1970s of Fleetwood Mac were turbulent for the band, which gained and lost members at a troubling rate. American guitarist Bob Welch joined up, at the suggestion of good friend and promoter Judy Wong (subject of Kirwan's song "Jewel Eyed Judy"). 1971's Future Games and 1972's Bare Trees featured Welch's, Kirwan's and Christine McVie's vocals and songs in more or less equal measure.

Welch brought a mellow jazz-rock guitar sound to the band, with songs to match. His contributions included "Future Games" (from 1971's Future Games), "Sentimental Lady" (from 1972's Bare Trees), and "Hypnotized" (from 1973's Mystery To Me). Kirwan's and Welch's tenures overlapped by two albums, but Kirwan's own erratic behavior on tour led to his dismissal in late 1972.

Bob Weston (guitar) and Savoy Brown's Dave Walker (vocals) were also briefly hired during this phase of the band. The firing of Weston during a late 1973 tour led to that tour's abrupt cancellation. This led its manager, Clifford Davis, to send another dummy band out on the road billed as "Fleetwood Mac", but featuring no original members of the band, resulting in a year-long legal battle.

Jeff Buckley - Live in Chicago

Jeff Buckley (November 17, 1966 – May 29, 1997), born Jeffrey Scott Buckley and raised as Scottie Jeffrey Moorhead, was an American singer-songwriter. Known for his beatific voice of at least 3.5 octaves, (recorded range A2 to E♭6), Buckley was considered by critics to be one of the most promising artists of his generation after the release of his 1994 debut album Grace. Quotes

  • "How well I have learned that there is no fence to sit on between heaven and hell. There is a deep, wide gulf, a chasm, and in that chasm is no place for any man."
  • "I am not a Christian artist, I am an artist who is a Christian."
  • "I did not vote for Mr. Bush, let's leave it at that."
  • "I wouldn't let anybody influence me into thinking I was doing the wrong thing by singing about death, hell and drugs. Because I've always done that, and I always will." - in acknowledgment of his similarity to today's gangsta rappers
  • "I learn from my mistakes. It's a very painful way to learn, but without pain, the old saying is, there's no gain."
  • "There's never been two months gone by that I haven't dreamed about him. He's tried to help turn me to the way of life." - in 2002, on his beloved brother Jack, who died in 1944 when Cash was 11.
  • "You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space."
  • "You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way."

  • "You've got a song you're singing from your gut, you want that audience to feel it in their gut. And you've got to make them think that you're one of them sitting out there with them too. They've got to be able to relate to what you're doing."
  • "Success is having to worry about every damn thing in the world, except money."

Eels - Electro-Shock Blues

Electro-Shock Blues

E had a difficult time in his personal life at this point. His sister had committed suicide just before Beautiful Freak was released, and his mother was diagnosed with cancer. These events inspired him to write Electro-Shock Blues, released in 1998. The lyrics deal with subjects like suicide, death, and cancer. Despite the fact that it is a very dark album, and not nearly as big a commercial success as its predecessor, Electro-Shock Blues is still many fans' favourite. Contributions to the album were made by Jon Brion, Dust Brother Michael Simpson, and T-Bone Burnett. "Last Stop: This Town" was a minor success as a single; the second single "Cancer for the Cure" was used on the soundtrack for the film American Beauty. Still a three-piece band on stage, Tommy Walter was replaced by Adam Siegel, formerly of Suicidal Tendencies. A large part of the American leg of the tour was cancelled after the death of E's mother. They returned to Europe later in the year, to open for Pulp. After the tour Adam left the band to focus on his own project, My Head.

Electro-Shock Blues is the second album by the band Eels, released in 1998. It is a very dark record (its main themes are death, suicide and cancer, coming shortly after E's mother's death from cancer and his sister's suicide), but there are also some optimistic tracks, "P.S. You Rock My World" being an excellent example.

Postal Service - Give Up

Give Up is The Postal Service's critically acclaimed debut album. The album was released on February 18, 2003 on Sub Pop Records. The album is only the second Sub Pop Records release album to receive a gold record status. The first Sub Pop gold (now platinum) album was Nirvana's Bleach. The most notable single in Give Up is "Such Great Heights" which has been used by various North American television commercials.

The third single release, "We Will Become Silhouettes" music video was directed by Jared Hess, screenwriter and director of Napoleon Dynamite.

Sonic Youth - Self Titled

Sonic Youth is the debut album by Sonic Youth.

Sonic Youth is a rock group formed in New York City in 1981. Current personnel are:

  • Thurston Moore - guitars and vocals
  • Lee Ranaldo - guitars, vocals and organ
  • Kim Gordon - bass guitar, guitar, and vocals
  • Steve Shelley - drums

In their early career, Sonic Youth were associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City, but have outlasted most associated bands. Their music has since been described as "punk" (as in their documentary 1991: The Year Punk Broke), and they are part of the first wave of post-punk bands. They have found moderate mainstream success, and are generally seen as one of the leading alternative rock groups of their time.

Initially inspired by the noise experimentation of Glenn Branca (with whom most of the band have performed); as well as the heavy garage rock of The Stooges and the noise experimentation of The Velvet Underground, they were known for using a variety of unorthodox guitar tunings, and for applying screwdrivers or other preparations to guitars to alter the instruments' timbre.

Members of the band have released books of poetry and prose (a beatnik influence is evident in both their writing and lyrics), produced films, staged shows of visual art and more. There is also an abundance of musical material recorded and/or performed with other artists and side-projects. Sonic Youth can be said to be an artistic collective as much as a traditional rock/pop band.

Pixies - Bossanova

Bossanova was the Pixies' third studio album, released in 1990 through 4AD Records. The title comes from the "Hang Wire" lyric "Every morning and every day / I'll bossanova with ya". Artistically, the album was a further move from the rough-edged, punk sound of the band's first two albums, and continued the mainstream approach apparent through much of "Doolittle", while notably introducing an element of surf rock, a genre members Black Francis and Joey Santiago were fans of.

Only featuring compostions by Francis, the album marked the point where the frontman's artistic control became absolute, and bassist Kim Deal began to become sidelined. Furthermore, it is also the first release (with the exception of "Monkey Gone To Heaven" B-side "Manta Ray") to deal with Francis' growing obsession with UFOs and outer space, evident on tracks such as "The Happening" and also the cover art. The theme would continue on the Pixies' follow up Trompe Le Monde, and last long into his solo career as Frank Black.

Kings of Convenience - Riot on an Empty Street

History

Erlend and Eirik were both born in 1975 (Erlend on November 21 and Eirik on October 20), and have known each other since the age of eleven. At sixteen, they played together in the band Skog ("forest") with two other friends, releasing one EP Tom Tids Tale, before breaking up and later forming the Kings duo.

The twosome found the American label Kindercore after appearing in European festivals during the summer of 1999. In 2001, they released their debut album Quiet Is the New Loud. The album was very successful and even lent its name to a small movement of musicians in the pop underground which took Belle and Sebastian and Simon and Garfunkel as their inspiration, trying to focus on more subtle melodies and messages, such as Turin Brakes.

The remix album Versus came out shortly after the Quiet. After this breakthrough year, not much was heard from the band. Øye spent the next few years living in Berlin and doing solo material, releasing music under the DJ Kicks series.

It was not until 2004 that the Kings' follow-up Riot on an Empty Street was released. The video made for I'd Rather Dance With You, the second single from Riot on an Empty Street, topped MTV's European list as the best music video of 2004. It also featured contributions by Leslie Feist.

Both Øye and Bøe sing in their tracks, and both of them compose.

The Arcade Fire is an indie rock band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Its members are Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, Richard Reed Parry, William Butler, Tim Kingsbury, Sarah Neufeld, and Jeremy Gara. Howard Bilerman, who played drums on the album Funeral, has since moved on to other projects. As of May 2005, the touring band includes horn player Pietro Amato and violinist Owen Pallett. Pallett has also opened for their shows, appearing as the one-man band Final Fantasy.

The band’s trademark fashion is the waistcoat, giving them an air of "frumpiness". When asked about the rumour that the band's name refers to a fire in an arcade, Win Butler replied: "It's not a rumour, it's based on a story that someone told me. It's not an actual event, but one that I took to be real. I would say that it's probably something that the kid made up, but at the time I believed him."

Porcupine Tree - Metanoia,Staircase Infinities

Porcupine Tree are a British progressive rock band formed in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. The most successful project by musician Steven Wilson, as evidenced by its growing popularity, Porcupine Tree is also one of the most original and creative groups of its generation. With their mix of early progressive rock, psychedelia, ambient and (more recently) metal as well, they have crafted a body of work quite impressive for its diversity, and the distinctive quality of the sound in their recordings. All this shouldn't come as that much of a surprise, given the fact that self-taught audio engineer and producer Wilson is very well famed for being a hard worker, and listens to many different genres of music for inspiration, as he once commented: "I like so many different types of things and they all go into the melting pot if you like that produces the music of Porcupine Tree."

Metanoia
is a limited edition album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, first released in December, 1998. It's mostly made up of experimental outakes from the Signify
sessions.

Jack Johnson - Discography

Brushfire Fairytales is the name of the 2001 debut album by Hawaiian-born singer-songwriter and filmmaker Jack Johnson. The recording achieved a moderate degree of fame for Johnson, who has stated that he never intended to pursue a career in music, already having attended university for film. It features straightforward pop arrangements of Johnson's songs, primarily medium-paced acoustic-rock. The cover features a photograph of Johnson in a hooded raincoat, standing in the rain.

The album's primary musicians are: Jack Johnson (vocals/guitars/piano), Adam Topol (drums/percussion) and Merlo (bass). It was produced by J.P. Plunier, recorded & mixed by Todd Burke, with assistant engineers Andrew Alekel & Chad Essig. It was recorded at Grandmaster Recorders, King Sound, and mastered by Dave Collins. Guests include Tommy Jordan (steel drums on "Flake") and Ben Harper (slide guitar on "Flake").

On and On (2003) was the second album released by the musician Jack Johnson, who provided the vocals and guitars. Adam Topol and Merlo Podlewski played the percussion and bass respectively. The album was recorded at The Mango Tree studios in Hawaii.

In Between Dreams is the third album by singer-songwriter Jack Johnson, who provided the vocals and guitars. It was released by Brush Fire Records on March 1, 2005. Adam Topol and Merlo Podlewski played the percussion and bass respectively.

Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies (for the film Curious George) is a soundtrack album by Jack Johnson and friends. Along with Johnson it features Adam Topal, Ben Harper, G. Love, Kawika Kahiapo, Matt Costa, Merlo Podlewski and Zach Gill. It was released on February 7, 2006 topping the Billboard Top 200 chart in its debut week.

Calexico - Hot Rail

Monday, March 06, 2006

Early history

Calexico had its origins in 1990 when Burns, who was studying music at the University of California, Irvine, met up with Convertino, who was playing drums with Howe Gelb in Giant Sand. Burns joined them, after first playing upright bass on a European tour.

Giant Sand moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1994. John and Joey formed the Friends of Dean Martin (later the Friends of Dean Martinez) which scored a record deal with Sub Pop. However, the pair split up with Bill Elm, the co-founder of The Friends of Dean Martinez in 1996. The band subsequently became a kind of indie rhythm section for hire, working with the likes of Victoria Williams, Barbara Manning and Richard Buckner before forming Calexico.

Alice in Chains were an influential grunge group formed by lead singer Layne Staley(1967-2002) in the mid-1980s as Alice N' Chains before the spelling of the name was changed. The name derived from their early stages as a band when the group would dress in drag at concerts. Along with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, Alice in Chains was one of the most commercially successful bands from the Seattle, Washington grunge music scene. Unlike many of their peers, Alice in Chains owed more to heavy metal than to punk or '70s rock, but the group became closely associated with grunge due to their Seattle roots, the image they often presented (e.g., denim jeans, Dr. Martens boots, etc.), and their introspective and sometimes morbid lyrics.

Kings of Convenience - Versus

History

Erlend and Eirik were both born in 1975 (Erlend on November 21 and Eirik on October

20), and have known each other since the age of eleven.

The album was very successful and even lent its name to a small movement of musicians in the pop underground which took Belle and Sebastian and Simon and Garfunkel as their inspiration, trying to focus on more subtle melodies and messages,
such as Turin Brakes.

The remix album Versus came out shortly after the Quiet. After this breakthrough year,
not much was heard from the band. Øye spent the next few years living in Berlin
and doing solo material, releasing music under the DJ Kicks series.

It was not until 2004 that the Kings' follow-up Riot on an Empty Street was released.
The video made for I'd Rather Dance With You, the second single from Riot on an Empty Street,
topped MTV's European list as the best music video of 2004. It also featured contributions by Leslie Feist.

Both Øye and Bøe sing in their tracks, and both of them compose.

The Organ - Grab That Gun

The Organ was conceived in 2000 by frontwoman Katie Sketch, born Katie Richie, in Vancouver, Canada. Sketch's musical training started at the age of three, when she began classical training on the violin. Her childhood was spent largely in ignorance of the underground sounds of The Cure, Joy Division and The Smiths, whom The Organ would later often be compared to. "Tiffany and Bon Jovi - that was my take on ’80s music."

[Modern Music Review]:
Now there are lots of indie rock band on the market. But only some of them can take a place on my heart.
The organ is one of favorite.I recommend this album because I found vocals so powerfull that power make you
feel miserable, helpless and crying. But They haven't an ordinary sound. The musics are dynamic. So you can feel
misery and happy in same pool.I wanted to say pool because people leave all of their load when docking.Start to listen this album from first track to last track and think that ''What are your feelings about this album?''Unidentified feelings?..:)

Ringleader of the Tormentors is the title of Morrissey's new album. Billboard magazine described the album as showcasing "a thicker, more rock-driven sound''; Morrissey attributes this change in sound to new guitarist Jesse Tobias. The album will be released on 3 April 2006 internationally and on 4 April 2006 in North America. The album will be released on the Attack Records label.

Recording for the album commenced in late August 2005 in Rome. Mixing began in late October 2005.

The first single from the album will be "You Have Killed Me". It will be released on 27 March 2006. The single is said to effectively illustrate the new sound of the album.

Originally Morrissey was to record the album with producer Jeff Saltzman, however he could not undertake the project. Early in recording Morrissey's publicist described it as "the most full-on rock record Morrissey's ever done. It's a balls-to-the-wall rock record, not a slow one like the last one." Yet in typical Morrissey style this seems to have been a myth. Producer Tony Visconti, of T. Rex and David Bowie fame, took over the production role and Morrissey announced on true-to-you.net, a respected fanzine site, that Ringleader of the Tormentors is to be "the most beautiful—perhaps the most gentle, so far."

Tony Visconti wrote on his website on the 1st November 2005: "We have been working on the music and each day it just sounds better and better. I find every musician in the band a joy to work with. Morrissey's vocals are passionate and confident. Right now I'm at the mixing stage and most of the musicians have gone home. I am two thirds of the way through one of the best albums I've ever worked on, with not only Morrissey at his best, but the plot has twists and turns which somehow involve film composer Ennio Morricone and an Italian children's choir. That should whet your appetite, you Moz fans, you!"

The final track listing was announced by True to You on 15 November, 2005.

The musicians recording with Morrissey in Rome were: Jesse Tobias, Alain Whyte, Boz Boorer, Gary Day, Mikey Farrell and Matt Chamberlain. Matt replaced Dean Butterworth who decided to continue drumming for Good Charlotte. Marco Origel, from the San Francisco area, engineered the album.

Ten Years After - Cricklewood Green[rock’n roll]

History

Formed in 1967, the band received an invitation to play at the Windsor Jazz Festival, which led to a contract with Dream, a child company of Decca — the first band so signed without a hit single.

After touring Scandinavia and America, Ten Years After released their second album, Undead, which included the hit single "I'm Going Home". This was followed by Stonedhenge, a British hit. In 1969, they appear at the Newport Jazz Festival, in the first event to which rock bands were invited. In August, Ten Years After performed a breakthrough American appearance at Woodstock; their nearly ten-minute, furious-to-slow-to-furious rendition of "I'm Going Home" was featured in both the subsequent film and soundtrack album.

During 1970, Ten Years After released "Love Like a Man", their first hit single in the UK. In August, Ten Years After played the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 to an audience of 600,000 hippies. Their set was hightlighted by performances of "I'm Going Home" as well as the blistering guitar solo and tuning parts on "I Can't Keep From Crying".

In 1971, the band released the album A Space In Time, which featured their biggest hit, "I'd Love To Change The World", a hippie anthem of sorts, protesting the Vietnam War and possibly even capitalism itself. At this point in time, Ten Years After were in their heyday: at the beginning of their twelfth US tour, they played to a sold out Madison Square Garden of 20,000 fans.

Taking the second half of 1973 off to pursue side projects, news of a band breakup ran rampant, but the album Positive Vibrations was still recorded and released in 1974. After a tour of the UK, and their last tour (number 28) in the US, Ten Years After broke up.

Ten Years After reunited in 1983 for a tour of the UK, and in 1988 for several American concerts and a single album, About Time (1989).

In between times, Alvin Lee fronted a band called "Ten Years Later" with a bass player and drummer who did some UK gigs, including the Bristol Coulston Hall.

In 2003, a version of "Ten Years After" reappeared featuring every original member except Joe Gooch. The new guitarist is Alvin Lee.

Leonard Cohen - Death of a Ladies Man

Leonard Norman Cohen, CC (born September 21, 1934 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is a Canadian poet, novelist, and singer-songwriter. His musical career has largely overshadowed his prior work as a poet and novelist, although he has continued to publish poetry sporadically after his breakthrough in the music industry.

Musically, Cohen's early songs are based in folk music, both for melodies and instrumentation, but, beginning in the 1970s, his work shows the influence of various types of popular music and cabaret music. Since the 1980s he typically sings in a deep bass register, with synthesizers and female backing vocals.

Cohen's songs are often emotionally heavy and lyrically complex, owing more to the metaphoric word play of poetry than to the conventions of song craft. His work often explores the themes of religion, isolation, and complex interpersonal relationships.

Cohen's music has become very influential on other singer-songwriters, and more than a thousand cover versions of his work have been recorded. He is also popular in his native land, having been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and awarded the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honor.
