The Clash - The Essential Clash

Saturday, January 28, 2006

Some would argue that if you only wanted two Clash discs in your collection, you should skip this 40-track overview and pick up The Clash and London Calling instead. No matter how transcendent those two albums are -- and they are among the very greatest popular music of the 20th century -- that overlooks the fact that the group had many, many great songs not on either album, including "Safe European Home," "Stay Free," "Bankrobber," "Rock the Casbah," "Straight to Hell," "This Is Radio Clash," and "Should I Stay or Should I Go," to begin with. That's where this 2003 compilation comes in. It fills in many of the gaps between those two records, while summarizing The Clash and London Calling well, providing a first-rate overview of the greatest punk band. It's not quite perfect, however: some great singles and B-sides fall through the cracks (notably "Gates of the West," "Jail Guitar Doors," "The Call Up," "Armagedion Time," "The Prisoner," "Protex Blue") and the Sandinista! selections feel nearly as haphazard as the album itself. Nevertheless, this does provide the best, most extensive and logical overview of the band yet assembled, and it's worthwhile not just as an introduction, but as a terrific listen.

Grunge

Grunge
Using the sludgy, murky sound of the Stooges and Black Sabbath as a foundation, Grunge was a hybrid of heavy metal and punk. Though the guitars were straight from early '70s metal, the aesthetic of grunge was far from metal. Both the lyrical approach and musical attack of grunge were adopted from punk, particularly the independent ideals of early '80s American hardcore. The first wave of grunge bands -- Green River, Mudhoney, Soundgarden -- were heavier than the second, which began with Nirvana. Nirvana was more melodic than their predecessors and they also had signature stop-start dynamics, which became a genre convention nearly as recognizable as fuzzy, distorted guitars. After Nirvana crossed over into the mainstream, grunge lost many of its independent and punk connections and became the most popular style of hard rock in the '90s.

Scorpions - Box of Scorpions

Scorpions are a hard rock band from Hanover, Germany, best known for their single
"Wind of Change'' and their 80's rock anthem, "Rock You Like A Hurricane". Contrary to common usage, the band's name is "Scorpions" and not "The Scorpions

Contrary to common usage, the band's name is "Scorpions" and not "The Scorpions". Their classic 1975 power ballad "In Trance" was covered by Progressive Metal band Fates Warning as a hidden track on the Japanese version of their 1998 live album "Still Life." Their song "Don't Stop at the Top" was covered by melodic death metal band Children of Bodom as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of Something Wild. "Rock You Like A Hurricane" is played before the start of Carolina Hurricanes hockey games as the team takes the ice. The band were given several mentions on the BBC Coverage of the 2006 World Cup, a small featurette on the band was shown as a tour of Hannover, their Home City was given by the presenter. The song 'Wind of Change' was played to footage of the Berlin wall falling, much as it was at the time.

Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac (formed in 1967) is an influential and commercially successful British-American Blues, rock,Pop band that has had a revolving door of personnel, and varied levels of success.

Rumours is a rock and roll album released by Fleetwood Mac in 1977. It was the second album recorded with this lineup, following the successful self-titled Fleetwood Mac album. In December 1976, prior to the release of the album, Reprise released the single "Go Your Own Way" b/w "Silver Springs."

The Dance is a live performance by the band Fleetwood Mac, released on CD and VHS in 1997, later on DVD. (see 1997 in music). It is a recording of a "Mac" reunion concert in Burbank, CA, with the University of Southern California Marching Band assisting on "Tusk" and "Don't Stop".

Tusk was a double album released in 1979 (see 1979 in music) by Fleetwood Mac. Considered somewhat "quirky" due to Lindsey Buckingham's apparent attempts to allow punk rock and New Wave influence into his work, Tusk did not achieve the level of success of its predecessor, Rumours.

Greatest Hits is a 1988 album by British-American band Fleetwood Mac. It covers the period of the band's greatest commercial success, from the mid 1970s to the late 1980s.

It should not be confused with an early 1970s release by the Peter Green incarnation of the band, also entitled "Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits", but containing an entirely different tracklisting

Jesus and Mary Chain

The Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy
About a decade after its release, William Reid of the Mary Chain described Psychocandy as "one of the greatest records ever made". The remark is indicative of a) William Reid's chronic immodesty where his band are concerned and b) the unarguable truth. Every indie guitar group since that has tried to either lend portent to a sweet melody by drenching it in feedback or render a messy guitar wipe-out palatable by stringing a semblance of a tune through it--and that's all of them--got the idea from Psychocandy. Given that it has been reinvented, borrowed from and downright burgled continuously since its release, it is further testament to Psychocandy that it still sounds so fresh in its own right. William and Jim Reid displayed from the off an innate understanding of how best to balance their acute melodic sense with the racket that emerged from their guitar amplifiers. "Some Candy Talking" and "Just Like Honey" are just two of the tracks which, it seems reasonable to believe, would have drawn applause from both Brian Wilson and John Cage. --Andrew Mueller

Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse

Sonic Nurse is an album by Sonic Youth, released on June 7, 2004. The cover art was made by renowned artist Richard Prince from his notorious Nurse Paintings series.

"Pattern Recognition" is based on the 2003 William Gibson novel of the same name. They have used Gibson's work as influence before, notably on a few tracks from Daydream Nation.

"Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Creme" was previously released as "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Creme" on the first Narnack Buddy Series 7".

Brian Ferry - Bete Noire

Bryan Ferry
Bête Noire (November 1987)

Bête Noire is an album by British singer Bryan Ferry, released on Virgin Records in November 1987.

The album was co-produced by Patrick Leonard, and was intended to increase Ferry's commercial stature in the United States. "Kiss and Tell" was his only Top 40 hit in the United States; the song also appears in the film Bright Lights, Big City. The album's second single, "The Right Stuff", was co-written with Johnny Marr and adapted from an instrumental B-side by The Smiths, "Money Changes Everything"

Sex Pistols - Kiss This (Greatest Hits)

The greatest single disc compilation of the greatest band that has ever existed.
Originally packaged 2gether with the Live in Trondheim disc.

Aussie reissue of 1992 compilation includes all the tracks off their classic 1977 debut 'Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols'. 17 tracks split into three phases, 'Early Songs And Other People's Material', 'Let Rip, Volatile, Full Fledged Songwriting On our Own' & 'Final group Of Songs Written Close Together. More Musical. No Longer Confused About Where We Stood.

he Sex Pistols were, despite their short existence, a very influential English punk band. While of the later set of English punks The Clash were perhaps more articulate and politically motivated, The Damned more versatile, and Buzzcocks had more astute pop sensibilities, the Pistols achieved more recognition through their iconic punk rock passion and flamboyancy, and no other Punk band of the era made such a lasting impression on British popular culture.

Alice Cooper - The Definitive Alice Cooper

AMG Review
In 2001, the U.S. received the 22-track Alice Cooper compilation Mascara and Monsters: The Best of Alice Cooper, while the rest of the world got the 21-track The Definitive Alice Cooper. Besides different album cover artwork, the difference between the two releases is minor, as the track listing is similar for the most part (save a few tracks). For a single-disc overview of Cooper's career from 1971 through 1991, The Definitive Alice Cooper is a fine set, as all of the original shock rocker's hits are present, as well as a few strong album cuts. Kudos to the gents who assembled this collection for mixing in such underrated early-'70s gems as the epic "Halo of Flies" and "Generation Landslide," which measure up nicely alongside such bona fide hits as "I'm Eighteen," "Under My Wheels," "School's Out," and "No More Mr. Nice Guy." The quality of the tunes dips a bit for the last nine songs (due to the fact that Cooper dismissed his original stellar backing band in favor of a solo career), especially when such blah ballads as "I Never Cry," "You and Me," and "How You Gonna See Me Now" are put back to back to back (as well as such latter-day spotty rockers as "Poison" and "Hey Stoopid"). But if you want a collection of Cooper's best known tracks throughout a large portion of his career, The Definitive Alice Cooper is a wise choice.

Metallica - Kill' em All

Released in 1983, Kill 'Em All was the first album to completely feature everything that made the nascent Bay Area thrash metal scene so unique. The record's release saw many imitators and followers release albums in its wake, and set the band that made it on the path to "world domination", as drummer Lars Ulrich would put it in the following year.

The album reaches furious speeds on every track (discounting the Cliff Burton bass solo "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth"), a testament to the band's early influences: Diamond Head, Motörhead and Venom, all English bands who combined the heaviness and technicality of Black Sabbath with the speed and aggression of punk rock. This made the band a total anomaly in the early 1980s heavy metal scene in the USA. The band wear their influences on their sleeve, and shades of tracks like Diamond Head's "Dead Reckoning" can be heard in "Seek & Destroy".

Pearl Jam - Ten

Friday, January 27, 2006

Nirvana's Nevermind may have been the album that broke grunge and alternative rock into the mainstream, but there's no underestimating the role that Pearl Jam's Ten played in keeping them there. Nirvana's appeal may have been huge, but it wasn't universal; rock radio still viewed them as too raw and punky, and some hard rock fans dismissed them as weird misfits. In retrospect, it's easy to see why Pearl Jam clicked with a mass audience — they weren't as metallic as Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, and of Seattle's Big Four, their sound owed the greatest debt to classic rock. With its intricately arranged guitar textures and expansive harmonic vocabulary, Ten especially recalled Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. But those touchstones might not have been immediately apparent, since — aside from Mike McCready's Clapton/Hendrix-style leads — every trace of blues influence has been completely stripped from the band's sound. Though they rock hard, Pearl Jam is too anti-star to swagger, too self-aware to puncture the album's air of gravity. Pearl Jam tackles weighty topics — abortion, homelessness, childhood traumas, gun violence, rigorous introspection — with an earnest zeal unmatched since mid-'80s U2, whose anthemic sound they frequently strive for. Similarly, Eddie Vedder's impressionistic lyrics often make their greatest impact through the passionate commitment of his delivery rather than concrete meaning. His voice had a highly distinctive timbre that perfectly fit the album's warm, rich sound, and that's part of the key — no matter how cathartic Ten's tersely titled songs got, they were never abrasive enough to affect the album's accessibility. Ten also benefited from a long gestation period, during which the band honed the material into this tightly focused form; the result is a flawlessly crafted hard rock masterpiece.

Ten is Pearl Jam's first album, released on August 27, 1991 through Epic Records.

In 1998 Q magazine readers voted Ten the 54th greatest album of all time; in 2003 the TV network VH1 placed it at number 79. It is number 207 on the List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

While the song "Black" charted #3 on the Mainstream Rock charts, it was never actually released as a single.

Hard-Fi - Stars of Cctv (2005)

Stars Of CCTV is the debut album from Surrey-based Indie rockers Hard-Fi. Fusing together a host of influences, including Happy Mondays-esque baggy, sun kissed Ibizan grooves and even classic two-tone ska, Hard-Fi have crafted an album that buzzes with raw energy and enthusiasm, celebrating the best of British pop culture. Includes the singles 'Cash Machine', 'Tied Up Too Tight' and 'Hard To Beat'. It was first released on 4 July 2005 (see 2005 in music) on Necessary/Atlantic and Warner Music UK. It was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music Prize, and reached #1 in the UK albums chart in January 2006.

A-Ha - Analogue

Short bio:a-ha is a Norwegian New Wave band who were most popular in the UK and the USA during the 1980s, but continued to be globally successful in the 1990s and 2000s. The trio, composed of lead vocalist Morten Harket, guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, formed in 1983 and left Norway for London in order to make a career in the music business. The origin of the name a-ha comes from the title of an early song. Originally, Paul had used the word 'a-ha' as the title of a song.

Review:Every track on this album really deserves a mention, but you wouldn't want to read that so I'll be brief. 'Birthright' shows exactly what this album is made of, beautifully melodic piano topped by the most perfectly sung lyrics and backed up with some subdued drumming. A well placed Moog synth in the chorus adds emphasis and importance, inspired song writing indeed. Analogue shows real maturity from a-Ha making them seem far removed from the floppy haired synth pop group of the 80's grown.

As their previous record shows a-Ha are legendary pop stars but with this album they have proved their ability as song writers. Analogue is out now so go check out a copy or see them live in December around London.

Fleetwood Mac - Then Play On (1969)

Then Play On is the fourth album by blues rock band Fleetwood Mac, first released in September 1969 (see 1969 in music). It is often considered the best album by the Peter Green lineup of the band, and one of the best rock albums of the late 1960s. It was the first of their original albums to feature Danny Kirwan and the last with Peter Green. Jeremy Spencer did not feature on the album apart from "a couple of piano things" Mick Fleetwood told Q Magazine in 1990.

The album has been released with four different song lineups. The current CD lineup compiles all songs from the two US LP lineups, both of which were deviations from the original UK song order.

Lenny Kravitz - Let Love Rule

In many ways, Lenny Kravitz's Let Love Rule is a thoroughly impressive debut. Like Prince, he plays nearly every instrument on the record, yet makes it sound organic and alive. Musically, it's a startlingly accurate replication of late-'60s psychedelia, crossed with a Princely groove and a heavy John Lennon fixation. Kravitz has no desire to move forward, he only wants to recreate classic rock, and as a result, Let Love Rule is an enormous, guilty pleasure. His songcraft may be derivative, but it's catchy -- the title track has a lean groove and a colorful chorus, "Sittin' on Top of the World" and "Does Anybody out There Even Care" have strong hooks, and while the stately psychedelia of "I Build This Garden for Us" can sound like a parody, it is quite effective. Kravitz stumbles when he gets preachy (the awkward "Mr. Cab Driver") or flowery ("Flower Child"), but that doesn't diminish the pleasures of Let Love Rule.

Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up The Girl

"Name" changed the game for the Goo Goo Dolls. Prior to that unexpected hit ballad, the Buffalo trio was pretty much content to turn out amiably sloppy rock & roll in the style of the Replacements. Like the latter-day 'Mats, they weren't adverse to cleaning up their sound a little bit, but once they had a hit, they were happy to jump headfirst into the mainstream, cleaning up their rockers until they shone and embracing acoustic power ballads instead of shunning them. In fact, "Iris" -- their contribution to the City of Angels soundtrack and lead single for their sixth album, Dizzy Up the Girl -- is a virtual rewrite of "Name." The funny thing is, where most college rock bands of the Bush era sounded awkward as mainstream rockers, the Goo Goo Dolls actually sound better as a mainstream band, partially because they were hardly underground in the first place. Like a less mannered and conflicted Let Your Dim Light Shine-era Soul Asylum, the trio balances hard rockers with ballads. The difference is, they enjoy the mainstreaming of their music and respond with one of their catchiest sets of songs. There's nothing new on the record apart from their willingness to polish their music so it reaches the widest audience. That will alienate whatever hardcore followers they have left, but that attitude will likely please anyone brought aboard with "Name" and "Iris."

Lo-Fi

Lo-Fi
During the late '80s and early '90s, lo fidelity became not only a description of the recording quality of a particular album, but it also became a genre onto itself. Throughout rock & roll's history, recordings were made cheaply and quickly, often on substandard equipment. In that sense, the earliest rock & roll records, most of the garage rock of the '60s, and much of the punk rock of the late '70s could be tagged as Lo-Fi. However, the term came to refer to a breed of underground indie rockers that recorded their material at home on four-track machines. Most of this music grew out of the American underground of the '80s, including bands like R.E.M., as well as a handful of British post-punk bands and New Zealand bands like the Chills and the Clean. Often, these lo-fi bands fluctuated from simple pop and rock songs to free-form song structures to pure noise and arty experimentalism. Even when the groups kept the songs relatively straightforward, the thin quality of the recordings, the layers of tape distortion and hiss, as well as the tendency toward abstract, obtuse lyrics made the music sound different and left of center. Initially, lo-fi recordings were traded on homemade tapes, but several indie labels -- most notably K Records, which was run by Calvin Johnson, who led the lo-fi band Beat Happening -- released albums on vinyl. Several groups in the late '80s, like Pussy Galore, Beat Happening, and Royal Trux earned small cult followings within the American underground. By 1992, groups like Sebadoh and Pavement had become popular cult acts in America and Britain with their willfully noisy, chaotic recordings. A few years later, Liz Phair and Beck helped break the lo-fi aesthetic into the mainstream, albeit in a more streamlined fashion.

Tenacious D - Tenacious D

Tenacious D is the debut album of the comedy rock duo Jack Black and Kyle Gass. For their first album, they enlisted the help of drummer Dave Grohl; keyboardist Page McConnell of Phish; guitarist Warren Fitzgerald; and bass player Steve McDonald. The Dust Brothers produced the album. The majority of the songs on their debut album stem from early versions as seen on their HBO TV series. The record itself does not list the song titles on the back cover as is the convention but instead on the back cover of the jacket; therefore one must open the CD (after presumably buying it) to read them. This is perhaps to allow songs with expletives or words otherwise deemed offensive to escape censorship or omission.

The band's signature song is "Tribute", a tribute to the "greatest song in the world", which - according to the duo - was once created by themselves and has now unfortunately been forgotten. Early versions of the song incorporated guitar riffs borrowed from Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven", suggesting that the so-called "greatest song" was in fact a rip-off or a cover of "Stairway to Heaven".

Their song "Wonderboy" (#34 UK, #48 Australia) and its video were also well-received, as a parody of and tribute to both the fantasy genre and power metal/epic metal. "Wonderboy" was a tale of an unlikely superhero, portrayed by Black in the video, as he formed an alliance with a fellow adventurer Young Nasty Man (Gass) and attempted to destroy a fire-breathing hydra. (Note: "Wonder Boy" is also the name of a video game series.)

Their song "Dio" was a tribute of some sorts to the rock singer Ronnie James Dio. In the song they ask that Dio stop playing rock music and allow them to fill his shoes. Dio himself liked the song enough that he let the band appear in his next music video "Push".

The third single from the album, "Fuck Her Gently", was released in May 2004. The video was animated by John Kricfalusi, creator of Ren and Stimpy, and features Jack and Kyle as nude cherubs on the shoulders of Satan.

The only follow-up release from Tenacious D as of yet has been The Complete Masterworks (on DVD).

Iron Maiden - Virtual XI

Iron Maiden is a British heavy metal band from East London. Formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris, previously of Gypsy's Kiss and Smiler, they are one of the most successful and influential bands in the heavy metal genre, selling over 60 million albums worldwide. Iron Maiden has so far released thirteen studio albums, four "best of" compilations, eight live albums and four limited boxed-sets. They won the Ivor Novello Award for international achievement in 2000[1].

Iron Maiden's work has inspired other sub-genres of heavy metal, including power metal and speed metal, and is generally thought of as an influence to any "metal" music containing dual-guitar harmonization. One example of their far reaching influence is that many bands from virtually every rock and metal sub-genre list Iron Maiden as one of their influences.

Iron Maiden's mascot, Eddie, is a perennial fixture in the band's horror-influenced album coverDerek Riggs but has had various incarnations by Melvyn Grant. Eddie is also featured in a first-person shooter video game, Ed Hunter. art, as well as in live shows. Eddie was originally drawn by Derek Riggs but has had various incarnations by Melvyn Grant. Eddie is also featured in a first-person shooter video game, Ed Hunter.

Goth Rock

Thursday, January 26, 2006

Frequently misunderstood in its aesthetics and misapplied as a term, goth rock is an offshoot of post-punk that existed primarily during the early to mid-'80s. Its reputation as the darkest and gloomiest form of underground rock is largely deserved, though today that reputation stems more from the visual theatricality of its bands and black-clad followers. Sonically, goth rock took the cold synthesizers and processed guitars of post-punk and used them to construct foreboding, sorrowful, often epic soundscapes. Early on, its lyrics were usually introspective and intensely personal, but its poetic sensibilities soon led to a taste for literary romanticism, morbidity, religious symbolism, and/or supernatural mysticism. Goth rock was generally not a critically acclaimed style, given its penchant for florid poetry, relentlessly mournful dirges, and melodramatic excess. However, it spawned a devoted, still-thriving subculture that kept its aesthetics alive long after the music's initial heyday had passed. The godfathers of goth-rock were British post-punkers Joy Division, whose bleak, remote, obsessively introspective music and lyrics laid the initial foundation for goth. But for all intents and purposes, the true birth of goth rock was "Bela Lugosi's Dead," the 1979 debut single by Bauhaus. Already chilly post-punk outfits like the Cure and Siouxsie & the Banshees became full-on goth bands around the same time, and their heavy, menacing makeup and dark clothes became an important part of their fans' expression. As goth rock's popularity spread among a certain segment of sensitive, alienated youth (first in the U.K., where most of its bands came from, then in the U.S.), its fashion sense grew more and more outlandish, and the original sound evolved somewhat. The Cure, Siouxsie & the Banshees, and the Mission UK incorporated more pop and alternative elements in their music, while the Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, and the American band Christian Death took a heavier, sometimes metal-influenced approach. By the end of the '80s, the original goth-rock movement had ceased to exist, but the music mutated into new forms and continued to influence many of rock's darker subgenres. During the '90s, the goth sound began to cross-pollinate with industrial music, producing hybrids that appealed to both sides, as well as the darkwave subgenre (which also incorporated '80s synth-pop and dream-pop). The latter half of the '90s also saw goth rock's influence cropping up all over heavy metal; a new breed of progressive black metal bands drew heavily from goth's sound and style, while some alternative metal bands also borrowed from goth rock's visual imagery (including Marilyn Manson, who -- despite countless news reports to the contrary -- is not a goth-rock artist).

Accept - Restless And Wild

For many years after its founding, Accept suffered constant changes to its line-up and was essentially kept on an amateur level, making sporadic concerts on festivals. Their professional career began in 1976, when they were invited to play on one of the first rock 'n roll festivals from Germany — Rock am Rhein. After the festival took place, the band received a recording deal and entered a professional studio for the first time, in order to record the self-titled Accept, an album which despite the band's efforts didn't achieve much success.

The first stable line-up of Accept was composed by vocalist Udo Dirkschneider, guitarists Wolf Hoffmann and Gerhard Wahl, bassist Peter Baltes and drummer Frank Friedrich. Friedrich and Wahl quit the band after the release of Accept, since they didn't intend to pursue a professional career in music. They were replaced by Stefan Kaufmann and Jörg Fischer, with this line-up, the band proceeded to record I'm a Rebel in 1980. This was the album which brought media attention to the band, which was subsequently invited to make its first televisioned show.

Deep Purple - Fireball

Fireball is a hard rock album by Deep Purple. It was released in 1971 and was the second studio LP by the classic lineup of the group. On this LP you can find a little bit of pretty much everything. The hard rocking title track starts off the album, but here you also can find some country blues on "Anyone's Daughter" and some signs of progressive rock on "Fools". The hit single from the album sessions was the boogie-inspired "Strange Kind of Woman", which appeared on the U.S version of the album in place of "Demon's Eye". "Freedom" was an vain attempt to mimic the single hit formula of "Black Night".

Slipknot - Duality

Slipknot is a nine-piece musical group from Des Moines, Iowa. There is a debate concerning the group's musical genre, with fans generally classifying them as alternative metal and detractors generally classifying them as nu-metal. Aside from their real names, members of the band are also referred to by numbers 0 through 8.

Slipknot is currently one of the more popular musical groups of the contemporary music scene, with violent stage performances, and music which is perceived as extreme in comparison with other bands in the mainstream market. Their albums and home videos have achieved Platinum-sales status, with Grammy indications in the "Best Heavy Metal" and "Best Hard Rock" categories for songs from all three of their albums.

The band is also known for its peculiar image: the members wear matching uniform jumpsuitsUPC barcodes printed on the them) and each has a unique mask. They change masks after every studio album, although the masks rarely have any major changes in them. Several members have several masks for each time period.

Jethro Tull - The Broadsword and the Beast

Broadsword and the Beast is an album released by Jethro Tull on April 10, 1982 (see 1982 in music).

The 2005 reissue of the album is expanded to include eight bonus tracks recorded during the Broadsword sessions, but not included in the original 1982 album.

Sepultura - Dante XXI (2006)

Dante XXI is a concept album by Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura. It is based on the three sections of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, Inferno (hell), Purgatorio (purgatory), and Paradiso (paradise). The album has five tracks based on Inferno (with just the band), five tracks based on Purgatorio (featuring the band with guests and other instruments), and one track based on Paradiso (an instrumental). Covers of Judas Priest's Screaming for Vengeance, and Sick Of It All's "Scratch the Surface" have been recorded as b-sides for the album.

The first single from the album is Convicted In Life. It has been performed live, and is currently available to download from Sepultura's official website. A video for this track has been filmed and will be released soon. A clip of the track "Ostia" is also available on their page on Myspace.

The majority of critics have said that this is the best Sepultura album featuring Derrick Green on vocals. However, sales of this album are disappointing, though not unexpected, since all Sepultura's albums since Against have gradually had decreasing sales. This is also the last album featuring Igor Cavalera on drums.

Original ideas for this album included a symphonic metal album (much like Metallica's S&M album), and a concept album based on the movie A Clockwork Orange.

Dante XXI was originally titled "Dante 05", but was changed when it became clear that the album would not be released by the end of 2005.

Santana — Amigos

By the release of Amigos, the Santana band's seventh album, only Carlos Santana and David Brown remained from the band that conquered Woodstock, and only Carlos had been in the band continuously since. Meanwhile, the group had made some effort to arrest its commercial slide, hiring an outside producer, David Rubinson, and taking a tighter, more up-tempo, and more vocal approach to its music. The overt jazz influences were replaced by strains of R&B/funk and Mexican folk music. The result was an album more dynamic than any since Santana III in 1971. "Let It Shine" (number 77), an R&B-tinged tune, became the group's first chart single in four years, and the album returned Santana to Top Ten status.

Depeche mode - exciter

Exciter is Depeche Mode's tenth full-length album, which was released on May 14, 2001 in the UK and May 15 in the US. It uses more digital music technology compared to their other albums. It was produced by Mark Bell of Bjork fame. It also had several songs which became big hits in clubs, like "I Feel Loved". The album also launched the Exciter Tour, which was one of the band's most successful tours.

Exciter went gold in the U.S., selling 426,000 units there as of April 2006. For some fans, however, this is believed to be the weakest of the band's post-1986 albums, while Exciter is prized by other Depeche Mode fans.

NIGHTWISH - discography - biography

Wednesday, January 25, 2006

Nightwish is a Finnish musical band formed in 1996 in the town of Kitee. Nightwish composes songs that are often classified as either symphonic metal or power metal; their musical style has also been described as a symphonic metal variant, called opera metal.[1] Nevertheless, Nightwish is considered one of the main developers of the symphonic metal genre, which encompasses similar bands such as Epica, After Forever and Visions of Atlantis.

Although the band achieved prominence in their home country since the release of their first single, they did not achieve worldwide fame until the release of the album Once (2004), which spawned Nightwish video clips shown on MTV in the USA for the first time, and inclusion of their music in U.S. movie soundtracks. Their biggest U.S. hit, "Wish I Had an Angel", made it onto 2 U.S. film soundtracks, as a way to promote their first North American tour (scheduled, but then cancelled due to conflicts with vocalist's solo career). They produced 3 more singles and music videos from this album, and a final one, "Sleeping Sun", from a 2005 best-of compilation, Highest Hopes, prior to their vocalist's departure.

As of 2006, the band is searching for a replacement to vocalist Tarja Turunen, who was fired at the end of 2005. A replacement for the soprano singer has not yet been found, but the four other musicians of the band plan to find one in the course of 2006, so that a new album can be recorded at the end of 2006 and beginning of 2007, and released later that year.

Bruce Springsteen - Born In the U.S.A.

Classic
His third album, Born to Run was Springsteen's breakthrough hit and launched his career in the United States and around the world. His first album to feature Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg, Born to Run was preceded by hype due to overwhelming critical acclaim. While his previous two albums, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. and The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle, received good reviews, popular success had been scarce; Born to Run cemented Springsteen's reputation among critics and established his first mainstream fanbase.

The album is noted for its use of introductions to set the tone of each song (much of the record was composed on piano, not guitar), and for the Phil Spector-like "Wall of Sound" arrangements and production. Indeed, Springsteen has said that he wanted "Born to Run" to sound like "Roy Orbison singing Bob Dylan, produced by Spector."

In terms of the original LP's sequencing, Springsteen eventually adopted a "four corners" approach, as the songs beginning each side ("Thunder Road", "Born to Run") were uplifting odes to escape, while the songs ending each side ("Backstreets", "Jungleland") were sad epics of loss, betrayal, and defeat. (Originally, he had planned to begin and end the album with alternative versions of "Thunder Road".)

Upon release, the album peaked at number 3 on the Billboard album chart and spent over two years in the top 100 best-selling albums. Most reviews were immediate raves, even to the extent of writer Greil Marcus comparing the introduction to "Backstreets" to The Iliad.

The album's reputation has not suffered over time. Rolling Stone's 2002 list of the greatest 500 albums of all time ranked Born to Run at number 18. In 2003, Born to Run was ranked as the most popular album in the first Zagat Survey Music Guide. Also in 2003, the TV network VH1 named it the 27th-greatest album of all time. In 2003, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.

Green Day - American Idiot

American Idiot is Green Day's seventh studio album and first rock opera, and was released in 2004. It is the first #1 album for Green Day on both sides of the Atlantic.

The theme of the album largely deals with the nature of individuality and rebellion. Some allusions to contemporary political issues are included, but the story is focused on the life of a troubled teenager struggling for identity in the midst of an uncaring world. American Idiot was nominated for seven Grammy Awards, and won the Best Rock Album of 2005. The opening track of the album, "American Idiot", won an award for best song in a video game in EA Sports' Madden NFL 2005. Green Day also won seven MTV Video Music Awards for the "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "American Idiot" videos.

This album marked the end of a commercial slump for Green Day. Many had speculated that they would find it difficult to follow up Warning, which in itself had proved slightly less popular than Nimrod. This is also hinted at with the long gestation time of this album, filled in with a greatest hits album and a B-Sides album (International Superhits! and Shenanigans). This is likely another reason for the band's decision to completely re-invent their style with this conceptual work. All of the album's singles proved very popular, a feat not matched since Dookie. American Idiot has also met with critical acclaim, with critics praising its ambition and politics.

There are five videos from the album, "American Idiot", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "Holiday", "Wake Me Up When September Ends", and the 9-minute "Jesus of Suburbia".

American Idiot has sold 5.6 million units in the US as of April 2006, excluding that American Idiot has sold 1 million digital albums over the internet, and has been certified as a platinum digital record. It has not yet, however, been certified 5x Platinum for physical CD sales.

Alternative Pop/Rock

Alternative Pop/Rock is essentially a catch-all term for post-punk bands from the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s. Though there is a variety of musical styles within Alternative Rock, they are all tied together since they existed outside of the mainstream. In some ways, there are two waves of alternative bands, with Nirvana's success in 1991 acting as a dividing point. In the '80s, most alternative bands were on independent labels; if they were on majors, they didn't receive as much support as most of the label's mainstream acts. During the '80s, alternative included everything from jangle pop, post-hardcore punk, funk metal, punk pop, and experimental rock. After Nirvana's popularity in the '90s, alternative included all of these subgenres, but many of the edges were sanded off because the music was now being marketed as part of the mainstream. Hard rock and punk-derived music were more commercially successful than the left-of-center pop that dominated late-'80s alternative pop/rock, so alternative lost some of its quirkier tendencies in the '90s. Most experimental bands were relegated to indie rock.

John Frusciante - Curtains 2005

Modern Music Recommended
This album is great.I uploaded it for you and should taste this great music.
John Frusciante (born March 5, 1970 in Queens, New York) is a guitarist performing with the Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as a solo artist

Curtains is an album by John Frusciante released February 1, 2005 by the label Record Collection. It was the last album of a six album series of solo efforts.

Curtains is mostly acoustic in contraposition to his previous album (with Josh Klinghoffer) 'A Sphere In The Heart Of Silence', which was mostly electronica. John has said in a recent article that he recorded this album using an 8-Track that King Crimson used to use. Carla Azar (from the band Autolux) plays drums, Ken Wild plays upright bass, and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (of The Mars Volta) makes various guest appearances on guitar. John plays all other instruments on the album.

Ian Brown - The Greatest - 2005

Ian Brown (born February 20, 1963) is a solo British musician and former lead singer of The Stone Roses, a popular indie rock band. Since the Roses broke up in 1996, Brown has released 4 solo albums to critical acclaim in his native country. He has appeared on several club tours and has performed at the Glastonbury Festival three times since 1998.

Brown was born on the 20th of February 1963 in Warrington. His father George was a joiner and his mother Jean worked in a paper factory. He grew up in Timperley, South Manchester. He was a great admirer of Muhammed Ali and Bruce Lee, and learnt karate. His interest in music was inspired by the original punk bands, specificially the Sex Pistols but also the likes of Angelic Upstarts and The Clash (he and original Stone Roses bassist Pete Garner attended the recording of the single "Bankrobber" in Manchester). He shared his musical interest with John Squire who lived on the same street. He also loved northern soul music and attended all-night events across the north of England. He joined Square's band The Patrol on bass before it disbanded and eventually became singer to the newly-formed Stone Roses in about 1984 after being told at a party by soul-legend Geno Washington 'You're a star. You're an actor. Be a singer.'

In 2005 Brown headlined the other stage on the closing night of Glastonbury Festival to great acclaim, playing five Roses classics and ending the festival in great style.

The Doors - Strange Days

Strange Days is an album released by The Doors at the end of 1967. This album is considered by some to be among the best works of the band. This concept album contains songs such as "Strange Days", "People Are Strange", "Love Me Two Times" and "When the Music's Over". This last track is a kind of long epic poem that could be compared to the famous "The End".

The album also includes "Moonlight Drive", which was one of the first songs written by Jim Morrison for The Doors. The song was recorded in 1965 (demo) and 1966 (intended for their first album). In 1967, a final version was recorded and released on the album Strange Days.

The mystical and mysterious atmosphere that springs out of this album is often compared to the sound of Carmina Burana.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 407 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

U2 - Vertigo Tour Buenos Aires

The rock band U2's Vertigo Tour began in 2005 in support of their 2004 album How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.

The tour grossed $260 million in 90 sold-out concerts in 2005, making it the top-grossing tour of the year. In North America alone, the tour grossed $138.9 million The Vertigo Tour won the 2005 Billboard Roadwork Touring Awards for Top Tour, Top Draw, and Top Single Event.
The tour's opening night was March 28, 2005 at the iPayOne Center in San Diego, California in the United States. The first leg took place in North American indoor arenas, the second leg in European outdoor stadiums during the summer, and the third leg back in North American arenas in the autumn. A fourth leg of outdoor stadium shows began in February 2006 in Mexico, and ran through March, visiting Brazil, Argentina, Chile; many of these locales had not seen a live U2 performance in nearly a decade. The last 10 planned dates from this leg, however, were cancelled as a result of a serious illness affecting an immediate family member of the band, and will reportedly be rescheduled.

Industrial

Tuesday, January 24, 2006

The most abrasive and aggressive fusion of rock and electronic music, industrial was initially a blend of avant-garde electronics experiments (tape music, musique concrète, white noise, synthesizers, sequencers, etc.) and punk provocation. As industrial evolved, its avant-garde influences became far less important than its pounding, relentless, jackhammer beats, which helped transform it into a darker alternative to the hedonism of mainstream dance music. Industrial's trademark sound was harsh and menacing, but its rage was subordinate to the intentionally mechanical, numbingly repetitive qualities of the music, which fit the lyrics' themes of alienation and dehumanization quite well. In the early '90s, Ministry and Nine Inch Nails took their variations on industrial to wider alt-rock and metal audiences, but a substantial number of industrial artists chose to remain underground. The first group of industrial bands -- England's Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire, and Germany's Einsturzende Neubauten -- were initially as much about beyond-edgy performance art as they were music. The second generation of industrial artists -- including Skinny Puppy, Front 242, and Nitzer Ebb -- added pummeling dance beats to their predecessors' confrontational sounds, for a substyle often referred to as electronic body music (centered around labels like Wax Trax). Meanwhile, bands like Ministry and KMFDM added metal-guitar riffs, which helped Ministry break through to a wider audience in the late '80s and early '90s; similarly, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor added more traditional song structures, and made his own persona the focal point, giving the music a rare human presence and becoming a star in the process. This more widely appealing strain of industrial continued to influence alternative metal throughout the '90s. Still, after industrial metal began to fade, a near-exclusively electronic form of industrial dance continued to thrive as an uncompromisingly underground style, with many artists coming from the U.S. and Germany.

Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine

Extraordinary Machine is the third album by American singer-songwriter Fiona Apple. Produced by Jon Brion, it was originally to be released by Epic Records in 2003 but was later delayed several times by the record label without explanation, leading to speculation that a dispute had arisen over its commercial appeal. The controversy surrounding the album and leaked recordings of the Jon Brion sessions were the subject of substantial press attention, as well as a highly publicised fan-led campaign to see the album officially released. In collaboration with producers Mike Elizondo and Brian Kehew, Apple re-recorded the album over 2004 and 2005. It was finally released in the United States on October 4, 2005 (see 2005 in music), more than three years after the original recording sessions began.

Evanescence - Not For Your Ears

Evanescence is a rock band from Little Rock, Arkansas, USA. The word "evanescence" means "the act or state of vanishing away"

Evanescence was founded by Amy Lee and former lead guitarist Ben Moody. The two met at a youth camp in Arkansas, where Moody heard Lee playing I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That) by Meat Loaf on the piano.

The pair discovered they shared a love of Jimi Hendrix and Björk, and they began to write songs together (the first was "Solitude" by Amy Lee, followed by "Understanding" by Ben Moody, "Give Unto Me" by Amy Lee, and the fourth song ever written by them was "My Immortal"). The songs were altered lyrically and musically by both Lee and Moody, which is the reason for having the names of both of them in the credits for writing them.

For some time they were unable to find other musicians to play with, and did not have the funds to pay for professional assistance, thus they were unable to play live shows. However, two songs of theirs, "Understanding" and "Give Unto Me", found their way onto local music charts, and demand for a live show increased. When the band finally made an appearance, they became one of the most popular acts in the area. They went through several names, including "Childish Intentions" and "Stricken," before deciding on the name "Evanescence."

Placebo - Meds

Meds as an album, is not a grand achievement in Placebo's musical capabilities. Some tracks do have a nice pop cleanliness to them that is very catchy, while others seem to lack inspiration. Molko said he was on meds, and i truly believe this album is better if either: you are on any drugs, or you actually have a respect for going back to the old, trying the new, etc. The production value that Sleeping With Ghosts had was tampered down and more repetative on this album, not to mention the lyrics. I am sad to say that this album was actually a disappointment. Sorry Brian, Stefan, Steve, don't let the producer take over your work after its done

Jimi Hendrix- Blue Wild Angel Live At The Isle Of Wight (Disc 1&2)

DOWNLOAD rapidshare

James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (Born Johnny Allen Hendrix) (November 27, 1942, Seattle, Washington – September 18, 1970, London, England) was an Americanmusician, songwriter and guitarist, widely hailed by fans and music critics as one of the greatest rock guitarists. It is practically without question that Hendrix single-handedly created modern rock guitar playing.

Mostly self-taught on the instrument, the left-handed Hendrix used a right-handed guitar and played it upside down. As a guitarist, he built upon the innovations of blues stylists such as B. B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, T-Bone Walker, and Muddy Waters, as well as those of rhythm and blues and soul music guitarists like Curtis Mayfield. Hendrix's music was also influenced by jazz; he often cited Rahsaan Roland Kirk as his favorite musician. In addition, Hendrix extended the tradition of rock guitar: although previous guitarists, such as The Kinks' Dave Davies, Jeff Beck, and The Who's Pete Townshend, had employed techniques such as feedback, distortion and other effects as sonic tools, Hendrix was able to exploit them to a previously undreamed-of extent, and to incorporate them as an integral part of his compositions.

The Doors - Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine

A powerhouse record set full of what made the Doors important. Strong lyrics married to distinct musical passages; storytelling at its' best. From the first tune through the last Jim and the boys allow us to, maybe not participate, but at least witness the madness and beauty the was the Doors. The cover painting, inside photography and text make for a complete package of delights.

  • In 2004 the video game Need for Speed Underground 2 contained a remix of "Riders on the Storm" featuring rapper Snoop Dogg, remixedby Fredwreck.
  • The song "Break on Through (To the Other Side)" is included on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube gameTony Hawk's Underground 2, and itsPSP counterpart,Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix.
  • In the 2005 EA game Burnout Revenge contained a remix of "Break on Through (To the Other Side)".
  • The song "Peace Frog" is featured on the recently released Tony Hawk's American Wasteland.
  • In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,"The Truth" tells CJ "I took some fellow travellers deep into the desert on a peyote safari a few nights back. We faced the inner light and communed with the Lizard King."

Robyn Hitchcock - Spooked (2004)

Recorded in Nashville with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Robyn Hitchcock's 23rd solo album in as many years finds him continuing in the acoustic mold of Luxor but with a good dose of Americana, relying solely on the pair for accompaniment, backing vocals, and production. According to Hitchcock, Spooked is essentially the product of a weeklong Dylan-fueled jam session with Welch and Rawlings, a fan of whose Hitchcock had recently become but who had been fans of his for nearly 20 years. "It was as if I was inside one of their records, but with me singing too," said Hitchcock about the sessions, and their influence is indeed palpable, most notably on songs like the folksy "English Girl," with its plaintive guitar and Wurlitzer accompaniment, and the slide-heavy, drum-propelled "We're Gonna Live in the Trees."
Yet the real standout tracks are those to which Welch and Rawlings lend their harmonic talents, such as "Demons and Fiends" and especially "Television." The latter, an earnest, pleading song of love, is among the most heartfelt of Hitchcock's career, even with his bedroom TV set its nominal object. ("Television, I'm so sorry / If I turned you off back then / I'm so small in your dimension / My kid will look like you, I swear.") So it remains a safe bet that there never will be a Robyn Hitchcock album that can't be described at least partially as "quirky"--this one certainly fits the bill. But being able to express penetrating insight and emotion through superficially bizarre material has always been one of his major talents, and Spooked demonstrates that, at age 51, Robyn Hitchcock's best days are definitely not behind him.

Paradise Lost - Gothic

Gothic is the second full-length album released by British doom metal band Paradise Lost.

It is a seminal work, being one of the major influences on the modern genre of doom metal along with albums such as Candlemass' Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and My Dying Bride's Turn Loose the Swans. Of particular note is the use of female vocals, rather more unusual in heavy metal at the time than it is today.

The 2003 re-release of this album appended two remixes of songs from Lost Paradise, bringing the total running time to 49 minutes and 30 seconds.

Remixed/live versions of "Eternal", "Gothic" and "The Painless" appear on the 2003 digipak re-release of Lost Paradise.

Ratatat - Classics (08/2006)

Mike Stroud and Evan 'E*vax' Mast have finally completed work on their second album, humbly titled 'Classics'. They'd have finished a lot sooner had their self-titled debut, released in 2004, not done quite so well on their home turf. After changing their name from Cherry to Ratatat just in time for their tour with Interpol, the duo garnered a serious amount of praise for their first single release, 'Seventeen Years' on Audiodregs Records.
The album was released shortly afterwards, and in addition to a glorious press response ('a surprisingly buoyant thrash ... intensely pleasurable' Pitchfork), Mast and Stroud found favour with a number of bands. This ended up taking them on the road around North America and Europe playing shows with The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, The Stills and Mouse On Mars.
They eventually packed away the flight cases after well over a year's worth of touring, and set about making the follow-up. The record began life in Mast's new Crown Heights apartment, but really found its feet when they spent 6 weeks out of the city at a friend's house in upstate New York.
Of course, 'Classics' remains resolutely instrumental, but they have however introduced a wealth of new sounds, from acoustic and slide guitar through to sleigh bells and cello. Having laid out their blueprint with 'Ratatat', their vastly improved production and writing makes 'Classics' a refinement of their art. Throw in the remixes they've recently been commissioned to make, the impending second volume of their mix tape, and their first ever full headline tour of the US, and you have more than enough to be getting on with.

Tangerine Dream - Phaedra (2005)

This is the first Tangerine Dream album to feature their now classic sequencer-driven sound, which kicked off the whole Berlin School genre. This album marked the beginning of the group's international success and was their first album released on the British Virgin records label. It achieved a six-figure sale in the UK, reaching No.15 in the charts in a 15-week run, with virtually no air play, only by strong word-of-mouth. It also earned the group a gold disc in Australia, and yet amazingly in their native Germany it sold barely 6,000. "Alpha Centauri" outsold it by nearly four-to-one.

The title track and "Movements of a Visionary" rely on Christopher Franke's use of the Moog analog sequencer as a substitute for bass guitar. "Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares" features Edgar Froese soloing on a Mellotron which is treated to slowly sweeping filter effects. "Sequent C'" is a short but memorable piece by Peter Baumann on flute, with tape echo.

Love - Love (1st album),Out Here

Monday, January 23, 2006

Love (May 1966) is the eponymous debut by the Los Angeles-based interracial quintet of Arthur Lee (vocals, harmonica, drums, percussion), John Echols (rhythm guitar, vocal), (lead guitar), Bryan MacLeanKen Forssi (bass) and Alban "Snoopy" Pfisterer (drums). The album was recorded January 24-27, 1966 at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood. One of the first rock albums issued on Elektra Records, the album was anchored by the radical reworking of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David penned "My Little Red Book", the anti-drug anthem "Signed D. C." (a reference to one-time drummer Don Conka), the bluesy "A Message to Pretty" and the stark instrumental "Emotions".

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine

Pretty Hate Machine (also known as Halo 2) is an album by Nine Inch Nails released in 1989. Pretty Hate Machine is the second official Nine Inch Nails release and the band's first major release.

Working nights at a recording studio cleaning toilets, Trent Reznor saved enough money to purchase time in a recording session. Playing all of the keyboards, drum machines, guitars, and samplers himself, he recorded a demo and sent it to various record labels. Not expecting any real response, Reznor was surprised when he received serious offers from many of the labels.

Teaming up with agent John A. Malm, Jr., Reznor signed a deal with TVT Records, a company mainly known for producing novelty and television jingle records. TVT paired Trent up with well-known producers Adrian Sherwood and Flood, as well as some lesser-knowns who Reznor later claimed to hate working with.

The album was released on October 20, 1989 and was a critical success. It received radio airplay for the singles "Down in It", "Head Like a Hole" and "Sin". The album also gained popularity through word-of-mouth and developed an underground following. Reznor quickly hired a band for touring with The Jesus and Mary Chain, including guitarist and future Filter frontman Richard Patrick. NIN's live set was notorious for louder, more aggressive versions of the studio songs, and also for destroying their instruments at the end. Reznor preferred using the heel of his boots to strip the keys from expensive keyboards.

Queens Of The Stone Age - Lullabies To Paralyze

Lullabies to Paralyze is Queens of the Stone Age's first album in 3 years since 2002's Songs for the Deaf. The album was released on March 21, 2005 (see 2005 in music) internationally and a day later in the United States. The "Deluxe Limited Edition" includes a Bonus Track and a Bonus DVD containing "a look behind the scenes and special bonus footage" (official wording).

The album was delayed during 2004 because of some changes: bassist Nick Oliveri was fired and Screaming Trees' former member Mark Lanegan went on tour with his own band. He's nevertheless still heard singing on several songs of the album. Because of these turmoils, there had been rumors about Mark Lanegan leaving the band, which Josh Homme eventually clarified in several interviews, was never the case. Nevertheless he encouraged these rumors to draw off the attention, which gave the press "something to focus on while I was just making the record."

All songs written by Joshua Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen, and Joey Castillo, except where noted. Additional lyrics on "Medication", "Tangled Up In Plaid", "Long Slow Goodbye" by Mark Lanegan.

Gorillaz - Demon Days (2005)

Demon Days is the second studio album by the supergroup Gorillaz, first released in May 2005. It is the band's first studio album of new material since their self-titled debut album Gorillaz. The album features contributions from De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley-Bird, Roots Manuva, MF Doom, Ike Turner, Bootie Brown of the Pharcyde, Shaun Ryder, Dennis Hopper, the London Community Gospel Choir and the Children's Choir of San Fernandez.

Demon Days entered the UK charts at #1 and the US charts at #6, outperforming their 2001 debut, while lead single "Feel Good Inc." became their biggest hit (UK #2, US #14) at the time. The second single "DARE" featured Shaun Ryder and became a huge hit, and also became their 1st UK No.1 .

The album was first mentioned in articles detailing the reopening of the Gorillaz' website on December 8, 2004. At first a March or April 2005 release date was announced but later pushed back to the date it was finally released. In an article for Q magazine in February 2005 it was reported that the album was to be titled We Are Happy Landfill. Another early title was reported to be Reject False Icons, which is also the title of Gorillaz' culture jamming project.

Moonspell is a band from Portugal, initially formed in 1989 as "Morbid God" by Fernando Ribeiro (vocals), Ares (bass guitar) and two of the bands former members as a black metal band. The band has often been described as doom-death and gothic-doom with several groups of critics and fans arguing between which of the two doom metal forms they truly belong to. Ribeiro, the band's leader has however stressed that "devilish music" would be a more appropriate term, as he often cites Luciferian Saga as important influence.

Led Zeppelin - Stroll On

Led Zeppelin was an English rock band, which is widely regarded as one of the most popular and influential music groups of all time.

Led Zeppelin consisted of four members; Jimmy Page (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, theremin, pedal steel guitar), Robert Plant (lead vocals, harmonica), John Bonham (drums, percussion), and John Paul Jones (bass guitar, keyboards, recorder, mandolin, Mellotron).

Forming the band in 1968, the members of Led Zeppelin were consistent innovators who never lost mainstream appeal. While the band is perhaps best known as pioneers of the hard rock and heavy metal genres, Led Zeppelin also included disparate elements from an eclectic spectrum in their music, including blues, rockabilly, reggae, soul, funk, Celtic, Indian, Arabic, folk, and even Latin.

More than 25 years after the group decided to quit in response to the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, Led Zeppelin's music continues to sell well, garner widespread radio play, and prove a seminal influence on modern rock music. To date, the group is reported to have sold more than 300 million albums worldwide, including 109 million sales in the United States alone.

David Bowie - Best Of Bowie

He is commonly known as the chameleon of pop, predicting trends and adjusting his style and persona, while holding on to his own ideas and creativity. A multi-instrumentalist, he is famous for playing guitar, keyboard and saxophone; but also plays harmonica, drums, cello, marimba, bass, koto and stylophone. He first rose to prominence with the heady, 1969 folk rock singleSpace Oddity" but is perhaps best known for the single "Changes" from Hunky Dory (1971), and the flamboyant, androgynous glam rock of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), and Aladdin Sane (1973). Subsequent albums have explored blue-eyed soul, electronica and new wave, often predating these genres' popularity or even the point at which they were defined as genres. The so-called "Berlin Trilogy", although receiving mixed commercial success at the time, is seen by many today as masterful and groundbreaking. After the slumping sales in the mid- to late-1970s, Bowie again gained commercial success in the early 1980s with his hit single "Ashes to Ashes" and the album it came from, Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) (1980). He reached his commercial peak with his singles "Modern Love," "China Girl" and "Let's Dance", the latter the title track of his very successful 1983 album. Many fans and neutral observers will argue that Bowie's consistency as a songwriter became more hit-and-miss afterwards. "

Bowie has had a profound influence on rock music from the 1970s to the present. In the cable music network VH1's 2000 list of the 100 greatest artists of rock and roll, Bowie ranked seventh. In the British Broadcasting Corporation's list of 100 greatest Britons, Bowie ranked 29. He has sold an estimated 136 million albums in his career and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In addition to his musical career, Bowie has had success as an actor, starring in The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), The Hunger (1983), Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), LabyrinthThe Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and Basquiat (1996). (1986),

Duran Duran - Astronaut

Astronaut is an album by British band Duran Duran, first released on October 11, 2004 (see 2004 in music).

This was Duran Duran's first studio album since Pop Trash (2000), and the first full album since Seven and the Ragged Tiger (1983) to be recorded by the original five members of the band. (The stand-alone single "A View to a Kill" was their last studio recording together.)

Duran Duran are an electronic pop-rock band, often classified into the aggregate "80s rock" genre and notable for a long series of catchy, synthesizer-driven hit singles and vivid music videos. They were part of the New Wave music movement in the early 1980s (the most commercially successful of the New Romantic bands), as well as a leading band in the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the United States. They are still often identified as an Eighties band despite continuous recording over their twenty-plus year history

Foo Fighters - In Your Honor (2005)

n Your Honor is the fifth album by Foo Fighters, first released on June 13, 2005 internationally (as In Your Honour in the UK) and a day later in the United States. The album is a double album with the first disc featuring standard Foo Fighters rock songs, and the second featuring more peaceful, acoustic arrangements.

Described by leader Dave Grohl as the "ultimate" Foo Fighters album, In Your Honor was generally met with receptive reviews. It entered the US and UK charts at #2 behind Coldplay's X&Y with the strongest initial sales of their entire career thus far.

In Your Honor features a number of special guests on its second mellower disc for example, Norah Jones, John Paul Jones (of Led Zeppelin fame) and Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age. Dave Grohl has described Jones' guest appearance as the "second greatest thing to happen to me in my life."

Dave Grohl has admitted that the song "Friend of a Friend" was written about Kurt Cobain.

The album was leaked on the Internet in late May of 2005.

There is also a special edition DualDisc set which contains a "making of" documentary, and the second disc in 5.1 surround sound.

Note: This album has been released with the Copy Control protection system in some regions. In the U.S., the MediaMax CD-3 copy protection system is used, causing some fan backlash. This copy protection only appears on the standard CD version of the album, but not on the DualDisc version.

Beastie Boys - Solid Gold Hits

Solid Gold Hits is a greatest hits collection by Beastie Boys, released in November 2005. In contrast to 1999's The Sounds of Science anthology, Solid Gold Hits consists only of tracks that were released as singles. Where the Sounds of Science is a double CD compilation, Solid Gold Hits contains one CD with all their singles that broke gold, plus a DVD with the respective videos of the songs. Although the standard u.s. release of the c.d./dvd has 15 songs, the japanese release has the song and video for right right now now as the last song.

The Beastie Boys are an American hip-hop music group from New York City (Brooklyn and Manhattan). The main members are Mike D (real name Michael Diamond), MCA (Adam Yauch) and Ad-rock (Adam Horovitz).

The Beastie Boys were the first successful white rap band, and one of the few acts from the early days of hip-hop that still enjoy major success. Their rock and punk-influenced rap has had significant impact on artists both in and outside the hip-hop scene.
