T. Rex - The Slider (Great Record)

The Slider is an album by T. Rex, released in 1972. It is a glam rock album released on Mercury Records and went on to become T. Rex's most popular album in the United States, featuring the main singles "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru", neither of which became hits in the U.S. The much-parodied iconic cover was #37 in Rolling Stone magazines list of the 100 greatest album covers.

It came after the success of Electric Warrior and many said that probably helped its own success. The virtues of Electric Warrior were all there, but most agreed it had a very different style.

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head

The Stooges are a rock music band that first existed in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The Stooges—like The Velvet Underground—sold rather few records in their original existence and often performed for indifferent or hostile audiences. (And like has been said about the Velvet Underground, the handful of people who first bought the Stooges' records ended up forming bands of their own.)

Nevertheless, the Stooges are often regarded as hugely influential both on the then-nascent heavy metal music and on later punk rock ( protopunk). Singer Iggy Pop and his wild onstage antics were often the focus of attention.

Early life

Fiona Apple is a member of a family rich with roots in entertainment. She is the daughter of singer Diane McAfee and actor Brandon Maggart. Her older sister, Amber, sings cabaret under the stage name Maude Maggart. Her brother Spencer is a director and directed the video for her single "Parting Gift." Her half brother Garett Maggart starred in the TV series The Sentinel. In addition, her maternal grandparents were Millicent Green, a dancer with the George White's Scandals, a flapper-era group similar to the Ziegfeld Follies, and Johnny McAfee, a multireedistbig band era; her grandparents met while touring with Johnny Hamp and his Orchestra. and vocalist of the

At the age of 12, Apple was raped upon returning home from school to her mother's apartment. The rape is only mentioned in one of her released songs, "Sullen Girl." While the media latched onto the story of her dark past experience, making her what Apple refered to as "the poster child for rape," the singer says the only reason she even mentioned the rape to an interviewer was because she didn't want it to seem like something of which she should be ashamed. As a child, there was concern she had anti-social tendencies, as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder, and she underwent therapy.

The Cure is a British band widely seen as one of the leading pioneers of the British alternative rock and post-punk scenes of the 1980s. A combination of lead singer Robert Smith's iconic wild hair, pale complexion, smudged lipstick, and the frequently gloomy and introspective lyrics have led to the band being considered part of the gothic rock genre. Smith rejects this and other attempts to confine the band to a single genre.

Joy Division - Preston

Joy Division were a rock music band formed in 1977 in Manchester. The band dissolved in May 1980 after the suicide of its lead singer Ian Curtis. The remaining members reformed as New Order a couple of months later.

Though they found only modest success during their career, Joy Division have since been acclaimed as one of the most inventive, evocative and influential groups of their era. Joy Division were labelled by many as a dark and depressive band due to the bleakness of their music and the suicide of Ian Curtis. The remaining members of Joy Division and people who knew the band have always denied this however.

Guest vocals were provided by Sanna-June Hyde and Asta Hannula on "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" and "For You", respectively. Dream Theater - A Sort Of Homecoming

Octavarium is the eighth full-length Dream Theater studio album, released on June 7, 2005 (see 2005 in music). It holds the distinction of being the last album ever recorded at The Hit Factory in New York City. After the Dream Theater sessions ended on Friday night, the lights were turned off and the doors to the studio were locked forever – ending an era in the music industry.

The Cars - Heartbeat City

Heartbeat City is the fifth studio album by American new wave band The Cars, released in 1984.

The album was a return to form for the band, coming after their darker albums Panorama and Shake It Up. A number of songs from the album gained significant radio and TV exposure, notably "Drive", played during the 1985 Live Aid concert, and "You Might Think", which had a memorable music video in heavy rotation on MTV in 1984 and 1985. Heartbeat City spawned a total of five Top 40 singles, two of which (the aforementioned "Drive" and "You Might Think") were Top 10 as well.

The cover art is from a 1972 piece by Peter Phillips called "Art-O-Matic Loop di Loop."

Bohemian Rhapsody"
is a song written by Freddie Mercury and originally recorded by the band Queen for their 1975 album A Night at the Opera. The song has a somewhat unusual musical form for a piece of pop music, with three very different sections, no chorus, and both a capella and heavy metal sections. However, it was released as a single, and became a huge commercial success. This was a decisive point in Queen's career, setting them on the way to become one of Britain's biggest rock groups. The single was accompanied by what is generally cited as a groundbreaking "promotional video", which helped establish the visual language of the modern music video. The song was included in all Queen's subsequent live concert performances, and still enjoys great popularity in many parts of the world. It is touted by some fans as the most popular song in the world.

Steely Dan - Gaucho (1984)

Gaucho was Steely Dan's last album before the band's 10-year breakup from June 1981 to October 1991. The album, originally released in 1980, was also the band's last studio album until the 2000 release of Two Against Nature. Despite exceptional difficulties in the album's production (e.g., Walter Becker getting hit by a car, a dispute over what company had the rights to the album, attempts to get the record company to lower the price from $9.98 to the original $8.98 and the accidental erasing of an entire track - "The Second Arrangement" - by a recording engineer ), the album reached #9 on the charts and went platinum. "Hey Nineteen" reached #10 on the singles charts. The album is a departure from their previous works, even the heavily Jazz influenced Aja. Gaucho relies even more on the Jazzy sound of the previous album, and the crisp productions differ greatly from their initial rock sound.

Rock

Rock & Roll is often used as a generic term, but its sound is rarely predictable. From the outset, when the early rockers merged country and blues, rock has been defined by its energy, rebellion and catchy hooks, but as the genre aged, it began to shed those very characteristics, placing equal emphasis on craftmanship and pushing the boundaries of the music. As a result, everything from Chuck Berry's pounding, three-chord rockers and the sweet harmonies of the Beatles to the soulful pleas of Otis Redding and the jarring, atonal white noise of Sonic Youth has been categorized as "rock." That's accurate — rock & roll had a specific sound and image for only a handful of years. For most of its life, rock has been fragmented, spinning off new styles and variations every few years, from Brill Building Pop and heavy metal to dance-pop and grunge. And that's only natural for a genre that began its life as a fusion of styles.

Alternative/Indie-Rock

Alternative pop/rock is essentially a catch-all term for post-punk bands from the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s. There is a multitude of musical styles within alternative rock, from the sweet melodies of jangle-pop to the disturbing metallic grind of industrial, yet are all tied together by a similar aesthetic — they all existed and operated oustide of the mainstream. In some ways, there are two waves of alternative bands, with Nirvana's unprecedented crossover success in 1991 acting as a dividing point. Throughout the '80s, the majority of alternative bands were on independent labels; those that eventually signed to major labels, such as Hüsker Dü and the Replacements, didn't break through to the mainstream and thereby were able to keep their hip credentials alive. If anything, Alternative Rock of the '80s was even more diverse and fractured than the mainstream; among the styles classified as alternative was roots rock, alternative dance, jangle-pop, post-hardcore punk, funk-metal, punk-pop, and experimental rock. All of these genres made into the mainstream, in some form or another, after Nirvana's success in 1991, but their edges were sanded down since many of the new alternative bands were signed by majors. Consequently, '90s altenative rock often sounds more sanitized and homogenous than its counterpart, especially since the heavier material proved to have greater commercial appeal than the quieter or quirkier elements of alternative rock. Most of these idiosyncratic bands didn't sign to majors (those that did quickly disappeared), deciding to stick to independent labels, where they had more artistic freedom. These bands were grouped together under the term indie rock. Although the term had been around since the '80s, in the '90s it connotated bands that were dedicated to their own independent status, either for musical or hipness reasons.

Indie Rock

Indie rock takes its name from "independent," which describes both the do-it-yourself attitudes of its bands and the small, lower-budget nature of the labels that release the music. The biggest indie labels might strike distribution deals with major corporate labels, but their decision-making processes remain autonomous. As such, indie rock is free to explore sounds, emotions, and lyrical subjects that don't appeal to large, mainstream audiences — profit isn't as much of a concern as personal taste (though the labels do, after all, want to stay in business). It's very much rooted in the sound and sensibility of American underground and alternative rock of the '80s, albeit with a few differences that account for the changes in underground rock since then. In the sense that
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us the term is most widely used, indie rock truly separated itself from alternative rock around the time that Nirvana hit the mainstream. Mainstream tastes gradually reshaped alternative into a new form of serious-minded hard rock, in the process making it more predictable and testosterone-driven. Indie rock was a reaction against that phenomenon; not all strains of alternative rock crossed over in Nirvana's wake, and not all of them wanted to, either. Yet while indie rock definitely shares the punk community's concerns about commercialism, it isn't as particular about whether bands remain independent or "sell out"; the general assumption is that it's virtually impossible to make indie rock's varying musical approaches compatible with mainstream tastes in the first place. There are almost as many reasons for that incompatibility as there are indie-rock bands, but following are some of the most common: the music may be too whimsical and innocent; too weird; too sensitive and melancholy; too soft and delicate; too dreamy and hypnotic; too personal and intimately revealing in its lyrics; too low-fidelity and low-budget in its production; too angular in its melodies and riffs; too raw, skronky and abrasive; wrapped in too many sheets of Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr./Pixies/Jesus & Mary Chain-style guitar noise; too oblique and fractured in its song structures; too influenced by experimental or otherwise unpopular musical styles. Regardless of the specifics, it's rock made by and for outsiders — much like alternative once was, except that thanks to its crossover, indie rock has a far greater wariness of excess testosterone. It's certainly not that indie rock is never visceral or powerful; it's just rarely — if ever — macho about it. As the '90s wore on, indie rock developed quite a few substyles and close cousins (indie pop, dream pop, noise-pop, lo-fi, math rock, post-rock, space rock, sadcore, and emo among them), all of which seemed poised to remain strictly underground phenomena.

Badly Drawn Boy - How Did I Get Here?

Japanese only singles & b-sides collection.
It is not identical to The Hour Of Bewilderbeast, but it is similar and near in quality. This album was written prior to Bewilderbeast, so that should also be noted and considered. There is less music on it, and it has less lyrical prominences. The instrumental sections are still excellent, and the lyrical songs are still catchy, and their unique sound is still there. It does seem that they had further mastered their sound by the time they created their latest album though.

INXS - Live Gibson Amphitheatre

With a career across 23 astonishing years, INXS are certainly one of the world’s greatest rock bands. With over 30 million records sold worldwide, countless awards from their peers and fans, platinum certifications, and a history peppered with exceptional achievements, the INXS band are arguably Australia’s most victorious rock export. From their first gig as the Farriss Brothers in Sydney’s Northern beaches in 1977, Michael Hutchence, Kirk Pengilly, Garry Gary Beers, Tim Farriss, Andrew Farriss and Jon Farriss rapidly won Australian then international acclaim. It is in the live arena that INXS band has forged much of its deserving reputation. From viewers as large as the 100,000-plus fans at 1991’s Rock in Rio concert, to the Wembley Stadium show in London later that year, where INXS played a killer show to 75,000 fans, through to the smallest sweaty pubs, INXS band have always delivered. Since the INXS band lost Michael in November 1997, they have performed live concerts rarely. On November 14, 1998 INXS teamed with Australia’s top male vocalist Jimmy Barnes to reprieve their hit "Good Times" and also "The Loved One" at the Mushroom Records 25th Birthday Concert celebration in Melbourne.

Strings are featured on 8 songs on the album which also features electric viola on some tracks - played by Bruce White. The engineer/producer was Chris Potter.

Van Morrison - Days Like This (1995)

From Amazon.co.uk
In an era when most old rock stars are left to recycle their greatest hits for megatours and MTV Unplugged, it's refreshing to know that Van Morrison still pours on all the originality and wit he had when he made Moondance. On Days Like This, Morrison continues his lifelong exploration of the human psyche, offering up highly entertaining and danceable (yes, danceable!) tunes about everything from love to manic depression. As always, Morrison's vocals rumble along through intelligent lyrics, ploughing up a range of emotions almost too numerous to catalogue. Needless to say, the sweet, soulful harmonies of Morrison's adroit backup singers and Pee Wee Ellis's fabulous horn arrangements serve as fabulous counterpoints to Van the Man's energetic and pointed performances. When all is said and done Morrison sums it up best in "Songwriter", a self-effacing ditty about the job he has done, and still does, so very well.

Dark Tranquillity - protector

Wednesday, January 18, 2006

Released in 1999, Projector marked a major departure for the band renowned as one of the founders of the Gothenburg Sound. Eschewing much of their trademark dual-guitar attack and ferocious "death-growl" vocals, Dark Tranquillity's Projector album featured almost as much piano and clean guitar as traditional metal. The album was also the first introduction (more or less) of vocalist Mikael Stanne as a "clean" singer - Stanne delivered almost half of the lyrics in an operatic baritone, far removed from his typical metal growl.

Because of its massive deviation from the band's previous efforts, Projector was met with mixed opinions by fans. For whatever reason, the clean vocal style was almost entirely discarded after this album, although the keyboards and pianos would become an integral part of the band's present sound.

The Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies

How did the Kinks respond to the fresh start afforded by Lola? By delivering a skewed, distinctly British, cabaret take on Americana, all pinned down by Ray Davies' loose autobiography and intense yearning to be anywhere else but here -- or, as he says on the opening track, "I'm a 20th century man, but I don't want to be here." Unlike its predecessors, Muswell Hillbillies doesn't overtly seem like a concept album -- there are no stories as there are on Lola -- but each song undoubtedly shares a similar theme, namely the lives of the working class. Cleverly, the music is a blend of American and British roots music, veering from rowdy blues to boozy vaudeville. There's as much good humor in the performances as there are in Davies' songs, which are among his savviest and funniest. They're also quite affectionate, a fact underpinned by the heartbreaking "Oklahoma U.S.A.," one of the starkest numbers Davies ever penned, seeming all the sadder surrounded by the careening country-rock and music hall. That's the key to Muswell Hillbillies -- it mirrors the messy flow of life itself, rolling from love letters and laments to jokes and family reunions. Throughout it all, Davies' songwriting is at a peak, as are the Kinks themselves. There are a lot of subtle shifts in mood and genre on the album, and the band pulls it off effortlessly and joyously -- but it's hard not to hear Dave Davies' backing vocals and have it not sound joyous. Regardless of its commercial fate, Muswell Hillbillies stands as one of the Kinks' best albums.

Johnny Cash - Super Hits

Tuesday, January 17, 2006

This collection contains ten of Johnny's finest songs from the first half of his career. The most recent recording here, One piece at a time (from 1976), is a very funny song about stealing car parts from a factory over several years and assembling them at home with embarrassing results. Jackson is a brilliant duet with his wife, June Carter Cash, which was also recorded by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood. I still miss someone is a wonderful love song and has been covered by a variety of other singers. Other classic songs here include Ring of fire, I walk the line and A boy named Sue.

Johnny Cash is a legend and many compilations of his music have been released. Obviously, anybody who is a fan and can afford it will buy a more expensive collection containing all these songs together with many more that you will not find here.

This collection is designed for those fans who have a limited budget, or for people who want just a little of Johnny's music to listen to occasionally.

Syd Barrett - Opel (1989)

For several years, the existence of "lost" material by Barrett had been speculated on by the singer's vociferous cult, fueled by numerous patchy bootlegs of intriguing outtakes. The release of Opel lived up to, and perhaps exceeded, fans' expectations. With 14 tracks spanning 1968 to 1970, including six alternate takes and eight songs that had never been officially released in any form, it is equally as essential as his two 1970 LPs. The tone is very much in keeping with his pair of solo albums; ragged, predominantly acoustic, melodic, and teetering on the edge of dementia. At the same time, it's charming and lyrically pungent, with Barrett's inimitable sense of childlike whimsy. The production is generally more minimal than on his other albums, even bare-bones at times, but if anything, this adds to the music's stark power. Highlights are the lengthy brooding title track, the multi-layered swirl of "Swan Lee," the alternate take of "Dark Globe" (with much better, more restrained vocals than the previous version), and the exuberant, infectious "Milky Way." Meticulous liner notes and excellent sound complete this lovingly archival package.

The Afghan Whigs - 1965

Afghan Whigs: Greg Dulli (vocals, guitar, piano); Rick McCollum (guitar); John Curley (keyboards, keyboards); Michael Horrigan (drums). Additional personnel includes: Alex Chilton, Steve Ferrone. Though they came out of the late-'80s grunge crowd, Ohio's Afghan Whigs always seemed a little too smart for rehashed '70s metal cliches. Throughout their career, they've moved further and further away from their hard-rock roots, buoyed by the anguished lyrics of frontman Greg Dulli (who had enough vocal presence to sing Lennon's parts in the dramatized Beatles film Backbeat). Over a sonic landscape that mixes '70s R&B with seductive, timeless rock & roll hooks, Dulli spins one dysfunctional passion play after another, dredging up the ugly emotions that most people prefer to keep hidden. Dulli uses them as fuel for his artistic fire, reveling in the catharsis and connecting with those who've been there (even if they'd rather not admit it). Sax and keyboards provide a welcome variety of tone to what's still ultimately a guitar-based rock record (albeit one that shuns cliche like a chronic ailment).

The Essential Bob Dylan

The Essential Bob Dylan is the fourth official compilation by Bob Dylan, released as a double-CD set in 2000. The first release in Columbia Records' "Essential" series, this package very nearly lives up to its name by including many of Dylan's well-known classics.

Some critics and fans have pointed out that several gems are missing, but nonetheless, The Essential Bob Dylan - which spans from 1963's "Blowin' In The Wind" (taken from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan) to 1999's "Things Have Changed" (Dylan's Oscar-winning song from the motion picture, Wonder Boys) - is a popular entry point for newcomers to Bob Dylan's music.

The Essential Bob Dylan has proven to be a solid seller in Dylan's catalog, reaching #67 in the US and going platinum, and peaking at #9 in the UK.

Motorhead - Motorhead

On April 1, 1977, Motörhead decided to do their last show at the London Marquee Club. They asked Ted Caroll, head of Chiswick Records, to record the show. Instead of recording it, he offered the band to record a single. This being their last chance, they recorded a full-length album in just two days. Eight of those tracks were released on their eponymous debut album - "Motörhead". The album's title track was coupled with "City Kids" and released as a single, the remaining four tracks from that recording session were released on the Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers EP.

The early works from Motörhead are characterized by an exceptionally powerful visceral impact. Their first few albums, up through "No Sleep 'till Hammersmith" and "Iron Fist" represent a distillation of hard rock down to its base elements, resulting in music of exceptional purity and quality.

The album sleeve artwork features Snaggletooth, the fanged face that serves as a symbol of Motörhead, created by artist Joe Petagno.

Coldplay - Parachutes

Parachutes is the debut album by English rock band Coldplay, released on July 10, 2000. It quickly shot to number one in the United Kingdom, and stayed in the top ten for thirty-three weeks. The album produced four singles: "Shiver", "Yellow", "Trouble", and "Don't Panic" (the last of these, however, was not released in the U.K.). In the United States, the album reached fifty-one on the Billboard 200.

The album is recognized to have an alternative rock sound similar to fellow alt-rock band Radiohead from their The Bends-OK Computer era. In fact, it has been suggested that the album's success was due to a portion of Radiohead's audience being alienated by the band's experimental and more electronic-influenced Kid A album, which was released in October of the same year and leaked to the internet 3 months prior.

"It's their debut and their only great album" Modern music.

What is a Blog?

Sunday, January 15, 2006

‘A weblog is a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser.’

‘A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.’

‘From “Web log.” A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.”‘

‘A weblog is kind of a continual tour, with a human guide who you get to know. There are many guides to choose from, each develops an audience, and there’s also comraderie and politics between the people who run weblogs, they point to each other, in all kinds of structures, graphs, loops, etc.’

‘A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in cronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominantly.’

So What is a Blog???

Confused yet? Don’t be - its really quite simple. To put it as simply as possible - a blog is a type of website that is usually arranged in chronological order from the most recent ‘post’ (or entry) at the top of the main page to the older entries towards the bottom.

Ok - now you are a seasoned blog reader - you’ve seen two already at least. Blogs are usually (but not always) written by one person and are updated pretty regularly. Blogs are often (but not always) written on a particular topic - there are blogs on virtually any topic you can think of. From photography, to spirituality, to recipes, to personal diaries to hobbies - blogging has as many applications and varieties as you can imagine. Whole blog communities have sprung up around some of these topics putting people into contact with each other in relationships where they can learn, share ideas, make friends with and even do business with people with similar interests from around the world.

Blogs usually have a few features that are useful to know about if you want to get the most out of them as a reader. Lets examine a couple briefly.

Archives - You might look at the front page of a blog and think that there is not much to them. A few recent entries, some links to other sites and not much else. However its worth knowing that there is a lot more going on under the surface that might initially meet the eye. For example in addition to the main page of this blog - at the time of writing this post there are over 520 other pages or posts below the surface that I’ve written over the past few months.

When I write a post like this one it goes to the top of the front page. As it gets older and as I add more current posts it begins its journey down the page until it disappears from it. This is not the end of its life however, because it goes into the ‘Archives’ of my blog. It sounds like a dusty dark place but its really just like a filing cabinet that is easily accessible in a couple of ways. You can read my ‘archives’ simply by looking on the ’sidebar’ (over on the left of this blog) at the ‘archives’ or ‘categories’ section. There you will see links to all my old posts which you can access either by month or by category. You’ll see a category for ‘Advertising’ - click that link and you’ll see all my old posts on the topic of Advertising with the most recent at the top and the oldest at the bottom. Click on a month and you’ll see what I wrote during that period.

Comments - Not all blogs use comments - but most do. This blog is not a monologue but a conversation. You can give me feedback on almost everything I write simply by clicking the ‘comments’ link at the bottom of each one of my posts. This will take you to a little form where you leave your name, email and a link to your own blog if you have one as well as your feedback, comment, critique, question, essay on why you love my blog, promise of money…. etc). Try it now. Scroll to the bottom of this page, click ‘comments’ and fill in the blanks with a little introduction to yourself.

Earn Money by Running Ads on Your Web Log

Run Ads on Your Blog

One of the most common ways bloggers are cashing in on web logs is by running advertisements. If you wish to automate your blog ads service, two of the most popular services available are: Google AdSense and BlogAds.

Using some ad services, such as Google AdSense, is just a matter of signing up for the service, customizing the code, and adding the code in to your blog. With ad services like BlogAds, you need to submit an application and get approved before you can use the service.

Even if your blog is not in the 'Top Weblogs List,' you can still profit from running ads. One way to make this work is by writing specialized and targeted content. For example, if you're passionate about vintage clothes, you can see that there are advertisers for this topic when you do a search on Google. So, go ahead and write about what you're passionate about and make sure to add your ad service codes not only in the main page of your weblog but also in the individual archived entries.

One thing you might want to keep in mind before signing up for any ad network service is that some of them may not allow you to run several codes from various services in one page. Always check the terms and conditions to verify this.

To see what other ad network service is currently available, see Advertising Networks for Blog Publishers. You can also check out Webster Flooble's Ad Network Listing.

Metallica - RELOAD

ReLoad is the seventh album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released in 1997. (See 1997 in music). The album consists of material originally written during the writing sessions for the band's previous album, Load. Indeed, Metallica had initially hoped to release the Load & ReLoad songs as a double album, but that idea proved untenable for a variety of reasons. Aside from the album title, ReLoad also shares similar artwork with Load (both use pictures from Andres Serrano's Blood and Semen series) and a similarly distinctive Blues-Rock feel in many of the songs. Finally, ReLoad was just as implicated as Load in Metallica's "selling out" controversy during the 1990s.

The cover of the album is original artwork depicting urine and blood. It is one of three photographic studies by Andres Serrano created in 1990 by mingling the artist's own urine and bovine blood between two sheets of Plexiglas.

Neil Young - Prairie Wind (2005)

Prairie Wind is a Neil Young album released in 2005. After recent dalliances with 60s soul music (Are You Passionate?) and rock opera (Greendale, which spawned a Young directed film of the same name), Prairie Wind featured an acoustic based sound reminiscent of his earlier commercially successful albums Harvest and Harvest Moon.

Young recorded the album in Nashville before undergoing minimally invasive surgery for an aneurysm in the spring of 2005, and some of the songs on the album appear to be informed by Young confronting his own mortality.

A premier live performance of Prairie Wind was held in 18-19 August 2005 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Here, Neil held a two-night concert where songs from the album were performed. These concerts became the subject of a film directed by Jonathan Demme entitled "Heart of Gold".

Young debuted the album's closing track, "When God Made Me", at Live 8 in Toronto, Canada.

This album was chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005.
